Get my CRAWL on

I got a dual transfer case from trail-gear, got it put together tonight. Put it together exactly how it was on the papers. Everything works perfectly as I turn the gears and shift into hich and low. I did notice that the counter shaft and input shaft move back and forth quite a bit though. Enough that when the input shaft moves forward , or if you pull on the input shaft you can hear and feal the gears grinding against the inside of the transfer case housing. Does anyone know if this is normal? Me being a machinist it seems to have too much slop... Im not sure if the input shaft will be push against by the tranny and stop this. I just dont want to install it tomorrow after work to find myself takeing it all back apart. So if anyone has any info on this I would greatly appreciate it.

I think that is normal, the t-case shafts get held in place by the back of the tranny. Marlin once told me once that back in the day, that was his favorite way of talking down the price of a used t-case from a junk yard. Once he got a price on the part, he would "suddenly" notice that excessive play and point that out to the sales person and often get the price reduced on the spot for the "damaged" part.

Thanks alot 4Crawler you put ease to my suffering. I couldnt go to sleep thinking about it. The more I thought about it and how it worked, I started to think it was normal but to have an expert like you chime in and tell me its good to go. I can now go about my daily life. Thanks again...

On a side note, Did you remember to grind down 1/2" on the shift rail on the rear case?

That is too funny and worth remembering

Yep, input gets held in place when installed to tranny. If everything shifts as it should on the bench when horizontal you should be golden.

Just remember that not everything is built by a machinist and sometimes "slop" is required. :p

That I did, ground down and deburred.. Thanks for the input. But it only called for 3/8 taken off. I took a hair more than 3/8.

Yes everything seems to be golden then, the slop scared me. Thanks for all the input guys. Will install tonight and then start building my custom crossmember, later this week. I should be taking pics of all this stuff...
