Gears or Locker?

i am thinking of getting a lock right locker.
but i came across these 4.56 gears from a v6(whole third member just bolt in)
the guy selling them says they will bolt into my 4 cyl diff ,is this true?
if i buy the gears i will eventually get a locker but not for a while.
my truck has a 22r-e with a cam and 35" x-terrains. i often pull a 17 foot boat. i dont need the gears for 4 wheeling but could maybe use them on the street.

locker is $375 cdn
gears are $250 cdn rear
$350 cdn front

im pretty sure no one is answering right now since you'll find all your answers if you do a search.

personally, if I had a 22re and running 35's with stock gearing, I'd regear, but if I was thinking about putting a locker in the rear, I'd save up for the locker too, then get the locker put in before I put the diff in to save money in the long run.

I would say get the locker. If you get it you'll have much better traction when 4-wheeling as opposed to a bit more "power" from the higher gear ratio in an open diff.

Get the locker...4.56s aren't what you need for a 4 cyl with 35s...you need 4.88s minimum usually 5.29s for 35s.

and to carry the motion I will also say get the lockers. 5.29s are what you want in the diffs. IMO to get 4.56 and still be open will be a waste of money. You would also need to get 4.56 gears installed in the front. Get the locker and save for new gears. that is what I would do.

456 misses the mark for making up for 35" tires.....

Lockers will not help you pull your boat, the 4.56 gears will. I'd do the gears first and then the lockers later - especially with those 35s.

4.56 isn't enough gear, you want 4.88's or better yet, 5.29's

If it is a daily driver 4.88's might be better because they won't rev as high, but 5.29's will pull harder.

locker is cool for offroad, but for towing you're gonna want a locker that you can turn off, so a 375.00 locker probably ain't gonna be the best choice.

Economically you are better off with gears for towing. Worry about the lockers later as said before.

I'd go with the gears also.

I would say gears, but I agree I dont think the 4.56s will be enough for what you are looking for, especially towing with 35s.

try to find some 5.29s or get some smaller tires.

I think its kind of funny how this thread in general tech is solidly for gears yet the one in offroad tech is biased towards the locker...Anyway I say locker or save as the 4.56s will be a waste of money with 35s

4.56 gears with 35's are a waste.

Do you know what gears you have now? If your name is your rig, you may already have them.

If I towed a boat regularly, I would think twice about running a stock geared 4 cylinder on 35's.

Changing diff gears alone makes a very small change in wheeling. Adding t-cases is where it's at.
