last week diving home up the 405 my tranny died. The fluid poured out between the transmission and engine block. I still don't know the exact cause but it can't be good. Anyway My 1990 4runner is 2wd and I have always wanted it to be 4wd. Is this the time? If there are people out there who are doing solid axel swaps there must be some nice independent axels laying around? And a tranny, transfercase? Is this a bad idea or a great one? please let me know.

 

If your going to spend that much time on it, you mite as well do a solid axle.

 

i'd buy an used 4wd 2nd gen runner. $3-4k depends on the condition. get a 5spd. they wouldn't call it 3.slow for nothing.
