This is probably a noobie question but, I'm planning on doing an Elocker retrofit on my 90 v6 4runner, and I'm wondering if I can use the 4.56 ring and pinion thats already in my truck, even if the newer Diff came with a different gear set.

 

Lockers work independent of gear ratio so yes it will work with your 4.56 gears. But you will have to grind your axle housing in order to accommodate the elocker motor

It is easier to swap the locker over to your carrier than to swap gears just so you know.

 

Good advice for 'lunchbox lockers', but does not apply to Toyota E-lockers where the whole 3rd member is part of the locker setup.

 

My bad I forgot the carrier is different on the elocker. You will have to reset your gears to swap them over.

 

Yea finding one with the right gears would mean I dont have to set up the gears again, which is something I'd rather leave to a professional in this case.
I've been doing a bit more research, and found out that my sway bar might not fit around the locker motor. I know some people can get by without it but this is my DD, and I'd hate to put in all the work just to end up flipping it cause someones grandma forgot her glasses at the optometrist or something. So now I'm thinkin of just saving up to get an arb and getting on board air at the same time. The arbs are pretty nice, but they arnt cheap. Not sure what Ill do yet.

 

Taking the gears from one housing to another housing you will still need to setup the gears, if your old housing has a crush sleeve you'll need a we one, their is a good chance that the pinion depth and backlash will be different

 

I can confirm the sway bar won't fit round the motor, at least not without some work. I'm blanking on his name right now, but there's a gentleman on here with an elocker rear and he fabbed some spacers to space the sway bar out from the axle enough it clears the motor. Just search for "elocker sway bar" or something like that.

Yea I saw that I thought it looked kinda hokey TBH. I ended up getting a Yukon zip locker instead. It was a little more expensive but the install was a breeze. Pretty happy with it so far.

 

any 8" diff gear will fit in an e-locker setup except for factory 4.88 gears.
