E-Locker Mod Finally Finished, Almost

Well It's been more than 2 months since I had my accident. I had planned to install a Lock Right but because of the insurance and my friend the mechanic, who is also half owner of a body shop, I was able to get an E-locker instead. It took nearly 6 weeks for the body shop to finish.

Saturday night I finally got my mechanic to pull the rear end. Sunday morning I started to make the Mods. My mechanic said he would not do them because they were "Mickey Mouse". He doesn't want to do any work that isn't STOCK.

Well I had a few minor problems but after 4 1/2 hours we had the new 3rd member installed and the rear end ready to go back in the 4Runner. He's going to put it back in Monday morning. So Tomorrow night I should get my Rig back. I’ve already installed the control switch, but haven't run the cable to the axel as yet, although I did connect it to test it out and it works cool.

So I hope to soon be able to go test it out.

Andy

Our member Phong has an excellent write up of his install linked through the Tech section.

Phong's E-locker write up

Since you have a V6 diff already it would be almost identical for your '91. Phong pretty much copied the way they come from the factory with all Genuine Toyota parts.

My install went more like this one. I made my own wire loom and controller from relays and a $4 Auto Zone on/off/on switch. Much cheaper but not as fancy. I use no indicator light.

I used this write up from Mike Carter.

I followed it almost to the letter, with a few minor differences.

1. I didn't do any welding.

2. I didn't have a Drill Press. A Drill press would have preferable.

3. After the grinding was done and the 3rd fit into the housing I used the largest Drill bit I could to just dimple the center points for the new holes. And then drill the hole with increasingly larger bits until the appropiate hole was reached.

4. The 2 long studs turn out to be a little crooked so we put a deep socket over them and bent them slightly until the 3rd went back on. We had to enlarge the two holes on the 3rd a little as well.

Other than that we followed Mike's write exactly, In fact I was lucky enough to get a control circuit Mike had made for someone else and sold it and the E-locker to me.

Hope this Helps

How did you get away with not welding? I thought you had to add to the carrier to put in the 2nd stud?

so if i wanted to retrofit the e-locker into my second gen. with a V6 what write up would be best for me to use? and where are some good places to start looking for a used e-locker?
Thanks

Below is a Picture of the axle housing after the grinding but before the drilling:
What I did was drop the 3rd member on temporarily and use the largest drill bit that would fit in the appropriate holes. I then drilled just enough to dimple the housing. The hole marked by the yellow arrow was on the edge of the gasket ring but I was able to drill deep enough to establish a center point and continue drilling with a smaller bit as a pilot hole and then finish with the correct drill bit.

I hope that answers your question?

I have the same rear end as you except for the gear ratio. Which means you can probably get away without having to regear as had to.

The write-up I used was done by Mike Carter . It was for a first gen. but seem to apply equally to the second generation. The only part that I found to be different was I didn't need to pound the housing to allow room for the carrier. The write-up includes some places to check for new and used E-lockers.

Here is a link to a Thread I started when I began my search. I got lucky and found one about 100 miles away, from a friend of a friend. I paid $500.00 and another $380.00 to have it regeared to 4.88. Although I was able to sell my old 3rd member for $200.00.

Hope this helps
