hey, put in a dual 4cyl transfer case set up in my truck. 2,28 23 spline in front case and 23 spline 4.70 in the rear case. when using the front case the shifter gets really hot. i figured this is normal because more gears are turning causing more friction, thus heat. but its getting really hot sometimes. does this happen to other dual casers? my fluid level is good too. and i installed the oil galleys and pump.

 

Mine gets pretty hot - you can feel the heat coming through the open hole in the floor (one of these days I need to get a shift boot ...).

Are you using dino oil? The lower friction of a synthetic might help.

 

Yep, mine do that, too. With conventional oil and driving at high speed for a long time, the levers are almost too hot to touch. With Redline synthetic, it is probably 10-20F cooler, still hot but not so much you can't touch the shifters.

 

it mostly gets hot when using the low in the first case and in higher gears. id rather resort from synthetic, iv had way too many problems with this thing leaking. first was the v6 adapter plate didnt seal and i had to drop it all and re seal it, then the drive flanges were leaking, then the rear output housing. i think iv pretty much got a hold of the leaks, for now.

 

it likely has more to do with heat coming through the floor now that you have cut it up. I have a large custom center console and I cant even touch it in the summer.

 

actually no, the first case, the one getting hot, is in the stock location. and i have a boot covering the hole. which im pissed about because dr smash started making triple shifters again! after i cut the hole.

 

Mine get hot as hell. I need to cover the opening and put on some shift boots.

 

 

Mine get hot too but you might wanna separate the two cases and make sure that none of the oil passages are blocked.

I think that I will give the synthetic a try. The ice in a cup melts pretty quick in mine...

My single case even gets really hot when I use 4LO a lot on a long day of wheeling.
