I am almost at the point of welding my rear axle spring perches on, and i only want to do this once. My truck is very low, with a frame height of around 21 inches, but i may want to go higher someday when its not my daily driver anymore.

Would it make sense to install a cv type driveshaft now, and weld the perches in with the pinion pointing at the transfercase flange, so it will be relatively simple when if/when i lift higher someday?

I have read 4crawler's writeup on driveshaft angles, and it is very helpful, but didnt answer my question about which is more appropriate for my needs.

 

I found that with the drive shaft angle more than 12-15 degrees, a CV shaft worked better. In my case, at 12* with single cardan and stock length shaft it was OK. But when the shaft was shortened 6" for the dual t-cases, the angle went up to about 15* and it no longer ran smooth. So depending on length and angle, that is about where you need to switch over. A CV will work at most any reasonable angle, so you can run them at lower angles, too. Only "gotcha" with a CV is that as you change ride height, you need to change the pinion angle to match the shaft angle. So they are more "finicky" than a single cardan where you can raise and lower all you want and not affect the alignment.

 

i would keep it single, ive got 7inches in back with a single and its smooth as a babies bum. if ya got duals then i would go dc like 4crwler said
