I've never heard of a 35 spline D44? Stock, they are 30 spline. You can upgrade them to 33 spline. The new D44 JK's have a 35 spline upgrade but they've only been out for a couple of years.

Ever compare a stock 30 spline D44 or stock 30 spline D60 outer to a 30 spline Longfield? Night and day difference. The 30 splines measure out to 1.31 as well.

I was comparing after market 35 spline D44 axles since it is being compared to the after market Longfield. I have the 35 spline ones in a Ford D44 with a Teraflex T locker and they also have an ARB 35 spline D44 locker. I can take a picture of the shafts when I dig the axle out since it has been sitting for a while. You can also search for 35 spline D44 and there are a few people running them in stuff other than JKs. And there are a few different makers for the shaft. I read online at a couple places that the Longfield and others narrow down to 1.24 in certain places but even if it is 1.31 the whole way then it should be the same strength or weeker than a D44 since they still would have less splines when compared to the 35 spline ones. I have never compared a D44 to Longfield side by side but most D60 front axles are 35 spline inner and a bigger, maybe 1.5 diameter, since a D60 stock shaft is bigger compared to a D44. Rear D60s are 1.31 and 30 spline though. How is there a night and day difference looking at a stock D44 and Longfield if they are both 30 spline and 1.31"? I am curious and not trying to sound like I'm arguing. Are the Longfields stronger because of the shorter shaft length compared to most D44s, after market wise? I have seen pictures of broken Chromo Longfields on the internet just like people see broken D44s but when you consider there are probably 500x more D44s under rigs then Toy 8" axles since they were only from 79 - 85, it would make sense you would see a bunch more D44 breakage on the internet. Sorry to Hijack the thread, just trying to make sense as to what makes Longfields so great compared to comprable D44 axle. Before I get jumped on by everybody, let me say if I was building an 85' Yota and wasn't going to run full width I would be all over the Longfield axles for price and ease compared to an exotic D44 although I don't think it is a fair statement to say no D44 can be built as strong or stronger than a Toy 8" if you have the money. Although I did try to stick to the thread in my first post.

That makes sense it would stay a constant diameter unless it needs a smaller diameter for bearings or something. Just shows you can't believe everything you read on the interweb. Now if I can find the money tree to put the axles under my truck. Although I will probably make an ass of myself and bust something in the D44 with 35s

Yep. That's the big deal with the 30 spliners ... stock Toyota axles are 30 spline, 1.31ish at the diff and the hub, but neck down to 27 spline 1.24ish between the inner and the outer.

30 spline Longfields are constant diameter and 30 spline at the diff, inner/outer, and hub.

I don't think anyone here is arguing that you couldn't make a D44 as strong (or stronger) than a Toyota axle, but it's gonna be expensive and limited selection, and by the time you do all that, why not just go to a 60?

That's my point... I didn't think D44s would work with a pre-95.
