cutting metal cover plate after body lift

I recently installed a 2" body lift, and like many others, need to make adjustments for the transfer case shifter. I think it'll be fine if I just cut some of the metal cover plate that is underneath the boots. My question is: what's the best way to cut the plate? I guess more specifically, what tool do I need?

You should have got a shift lever extension that is welded to the shifter after it's cut. The instructions in my Performance Accesories kit mentions it. There are 2, one for each shift lever.

Is it still hitting even though you welded this in? You may have to heat and bend the shift lever.

I don't think the extension would help. The metal plate is blocking me from going into 4LO because it gets in the way closer to the base of the shifter than to the top. So putting an extra 2 inches on up top wouldn't fix the problem.
