Carb ISSUE
Ok, so I start my 86 ripper pickup and it wont idle at all. It runs really rough and shoots out a mix of black and white gas smelling exhaust. Its stinky stuff. I think the choke isn't functioning properly? ANyone have any ideas?

have you had the air cleaner off to confirm the choke is closed when it shouldn't be? I would start there. whats confusing is you say black and white exhaust. I do not see how it can be both, it's usually either or. unless of corse maybe it's 20 degrees outside. But I have never seen it.

Yes, I have checked the choke. It seems to be working ok. its open 1/8 of the way when I manually keep it running. What else should I check for? The exhaust is black and smells heavily of fuel. Not a dark black just some. The truck will drive and run down the road but it sputters and chugs.

Ok, I pump the gas twice. Turn the key. The truck is hesistant to fire up, but it will. Runs on its own for about 5 second tops. Other than that I must manually push on the gas with my foot, or blip the throttle from the engine bay so I can try to look whats going on also. The truck runs, but sputters and sounds like ˟˟˟˟. There is a heavy sent of unburnt fuel in the exhaust and plumes of smoke from the manifold and the out pipe. The smoke is sometimes dark colored. Usually smells more than anything and just looks like a haze cloud. I drove the truck around for a while and it will run ok with the throttle 3/4 way to all the way. Wont idle at all. When I turn the 22r off, sometimes the carb surges and splurges some unspent fuel and fumes back through both barrels.

there is a sight glass on the front of the carb, the fuel level should be in the middle when at idle.
P.S> were you doing anything prior to this happening?

You are right about the fuel level ,I was just answering the question on how to check for a bad float. Seeing if it floats won't tell him much on the floats condition.

Prior to this issue happening, I was getting on it in a cornfield. Then a few hops and bounces later the truck acted up. I will check the float level as soon as I can. Say if its heavy? The float will be high up on the reading? If that's the case then what? Where do I look for this reading?
