BFG MT in 255/85 and sand

I have 285/75-16 BFG AT's and am looking at buying a new set of tires. While I would love to buy a set of BFG MT's or GY MT/R's, the reality is that is probably way more tire than I need. My 4Runner is my daily driver, and my commute is about 15 miles each way. My only off-roading includes driving on the beaches in Corolla, NC. I have been thinking about the BFG MT's in 255/85. This would give me similar if not greater ground clearance and aspect height. My '96 is flareless, so I think some people's concerns of a 255 looking too narrow might not apply as much. I could see how that tire would look narrow under Limited flares.

1. Is anyone running the BFG 255/85 (other than Expeditions West)? Comments? Pictures?
2. How are these tires, in any size, in the sand? Am I looking for trouble taking them out on the beach? I rescued four SUVs last summer with my AT's. I don't want to be on the other end of the tow rope this June.

Thanks in advance.

Brian

why get an MT then?

Why not just get a set of nittos? If most of your driving is on road, dont waste your money on MT's.

there are lots of threads that talk about this.

I like the look of the MT's. My question is, will it get me through the sand, or will I be exposed for the poser that I am?

LOL...i had MT's bc i loved the look of them...see sig!

The MT's should be fine on sand...lots of people do them. I think the most imporant thing is leaving a big footprint

There are a lot of tires in that size. Just search. One is by Cooper (Discover ST) which is an aggressive all-terrain.

Mine tend to dig more than anything in the sand. I never got stuck, but there was a couple hills I had problems getting up. I'm getting 2 285/75/16 BFG AT's for the rear to be used for sand.

My 285/75 BFG AT's just clear on the OEM 16x7's. I know a 285/75 MT or MT/R is not going to clear. 16x8 wheels are not an option. I have been down that road. I have a set of Limited 5 spokes waiting. A 255/85 will give me a 33"+ tire, and it should line up nicely with my flareless SR5 fenders.

You will need to air way down, the narrower tire combined with MT tread will dig like crazy. But you should still be fine. <head scratching why anyone would live with a less useful tread for their typical driving/wheeling style, faster treadwear, reduced handling, and increased noise 'for the look'.>
<oh wait, most of us do that....>

LOL...i did it and quickly became aware of how fast my tread was wearing. the noise is cool at first but then the thrill goes away.

I had BFG muds that lasted 50k miles. I was ruff to them, but kept up on pressures and rotation.
