ARB safari snorkel Questions.

hey all, just got back from camping and found some killer hunting grounds and really remote spots for camping, only thing is i have to cross a river to get there, i was curiouse on how the snorkels from arb help/ hurt gas mileage and power, and what the sound differnce is on them, i plan on keeping intake silencer mod off, and probably keeping the boat thing i bought for the whole in the front of the airbox open till i come to water/heavy dust,

just curouse what your thoughts are, saw the article about installation in the tech section, dosent look horribly hard.
thanks

Just put the snorkel on last week. It doesn't make any noise, doesn't increase horsepower, doesn't take away horsepower. I don't know about gas mileage (never paid attention), but I don't think it affects that either.

Haven't dunked it in the river yet either, so I don't know if it does what its supposed to yet.

But I get looks everywhere. You have no idea how many people ask if its a "parascope" ?

Wait till you have to cut that 83 mm hole in the side of your truck. I paced around for a good hour before I cut that one. Also add about $50 for tools you'll need to buy. Or about $100 if you have a runner and are considering doing this mod.

Glad to hear, it always served me well. With a tuned 5' firestik I got great range out of it.

I couldn't find the right size hole saw anywhere when installing mine so I ended up drilling a bunch of holes and sawing it out. Needless to say it wasn't very pretty when I was through but you can't see it after the snorkel is installed anyway. I'm pretty sure it restricts airflow at slow speeds due to the extra plumbing. In fact, the carb I used to run started running a little rich after installing my snorkel.

Just so you know, unless that river crossing is part of a trail, it's illegal to drive through it. The eco-freaks out there love to hear about stuff like this.

its JUST sheetmetal, and front fenders are real easy to replace compared to say, the rear 1/4 panel which is continuous with the entire body (on 4runners).

It still took some serious thinking .. before I could do it. I've cut up people, no problem, everything grows back. The sheetmetal doesn't do that

Yes, much easier to cut a person than your truck, eh?

Excuse me? It's attitudes like that which are getting our trails closed on us. It does not matter which state you are in, if the crossing is not part of a road/trail system then you don't cross it, plain and simple.

Pull your head out of your @ss and join the 21st century. Our trail rights are under attack in every state and wetland areas/stream crossings are at the forefront of the battle. Since oil from motor vehicles and water don't mix and because silt from crossings can have implications far down stream from where the damage took place, the eco-types love to use the "wetlands" excuse to close trails.

When a trail crosses a stream, get in and get out with as little disturbance as is possible. Don't spin your wheels or play around. If it's not a trail crossing, stay the hell out of the water all together.

This is not a game anymore. We cannot afford to lose more trails to stupidity or ignorance, both of which are demonstrated in your post. I honestly hope that you have more intelligence than was indicated by your posting. If so, then use it. If not, go find another sport where the rules aren't so complicated and difficult for you to grasp.

i have never been even looked at for going into a river or a "wetland" (where i live there is lots of open space that is mostly ag.. and they are man made ditches usually) there is a river not to far from my house that i used to go into all the time the cops would chase you out.. and thats about it. your not suppose to go in but they cant really stop you and that has nothing to do with other trails with river crossings...........i dont mean to piss everyone off but my 4wheeling in that river does nothing to anyone anywhere.. and if i dont do it someone else will anyway. plus if i choose to go in that river it does nothing but make a risk of ME getting caught and fined (most of this area is locally owned area so tresspassing) i support designated areas for that stuff like that too and i try not to piss the evo people off but honistly what i do has nothing to do with them closing trails....
