Welcome to the forum!
There are a lot of threads here on air compressors. Here're a couple "where to put it" threads:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123/extremeair-arb-locker-install-has-started-need-help-28332/
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f31/where-put-compressor-17129/
There're pics of my install in the first thread, which is also in a 96 4Runner Limited.

Someone mentioned a little while ago (I think it was Schaeffer) that there's a surprisingly large amount of space in the fender area behind the battery. I may put my caddy compressors there when I have time to do an install

well i figured where to put the compressor, how about in the rear behind the rear left trim panel. i pulled it out and there is plenty of room. the compressor is already mounted and i rewired the harness to my specs. this will keep it dry and clean just hope it is not too loud. hopefully i will have pics if i can figure out how to post them after taking them. just need to install wiring and run the line. well down time over a month now i have a locker, 4.88 gears and compressor and about 2000 later i am so ready to use it. i feel i been going through withdraws. i want to some tires spinning and some mud flying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ditto... early one when the ARB compressor was all i got, i neary burned my hand when i tried to disconnect the fitting.
since then i would dampen a small rag with cold water and place it around the compressor body to help it cool.
mine was mounted on the driver's side rear wheelwell. hmmmm... nothing like smelling 80 weight gear oil for a long drive home...
