L series trannys will bolt right up in a pre84 truck. They are found on 83 and earlier trucks. Any 84-95 22r/e tranny (G or W series) will bolt up to a 20r 22r or 22re but they are longer then the early L trannys. So drive shaft and cross member work needs to be done if you use an 84-95 G or W series tranny in a 1st gen truck. The pre84 L series trannies have weaker bearings and are more prone to failure then the later G and W series trannies. The L43 and 45 (4 speed) are supposedly weaker then the L50 and L52 (5 speed) trannies.
If you're looking to put a G or W series in a 1st gen truck, Budbuilt.com makes some killer cross members.
