I have a set of e locker diffs out of 98 4runners . One is in great shape and actuates nicely . The other came from the coast and is rusted . The electric actuator is noisy and the actuator housing is rotting away. I pulled it apart but it's beyond repair .

I found a forum where a guy takes a single acting ,spring return ,air cylinder and basically attaches it to the rod that the locking fork slides on .

I am wondering if anybody else has done this mod on a Toyota 8" elocker?

I think I may be able to do it by completely removing the electric actuator , and modifying the aluminum stop plate/ fork rod .
The air cylinder I was thinking of using is a single acting , spring return , 3/4bore , 1" stroke . It cost a whopping 18$ .


Is there any more info on this?has anyone done it?

why not make it even more fail safe and convert to cable.

Everything I have read about the cable conversions is that they are expensive and kind of flimsy . I am installing on board air so I will have a air source anyways .
The cable conversion is priced around 400$ Per locker . The air cylinders I ordered are about 20$ each.
