4.7's Are Awesome
So last fall I went crazy buying all kinds of mods for my '79. I'm now almost complete with the build.
Months ago I built my transfer case with 4.7's from Trail Gear. A few weeks ago I finally got my W56 swapped into my old '79. I still need my rear driveline shortened but I finally, tonight got a front driveline rigged together to test my 4.7's.
All I can say is WOW. Amazing. Slow. Awesome.
I was only front wheel driving it around the parking lot of the shop for a few minutes at about 10:00PM tonight open header. (Still need exhaust...) I have a LockRight in the front so it was kinda tough to turn and it always pulled straight but it was cool to be able to make sure the new clutch and transmission and transfer case were all working OK. 5th gear low range feels like stock first gear low range.
In 2 Low first gear, you can idle around the parking lot and literally walk beside the truck no problem, it's ridiculously slow. I was wondering when or why you could need any lower gearing, but I've yet to get it offroad and actually use it, I may understand then.
Anyway I'm just excited to see my truck almost roadworthy again and everything seems to be working OK!

i guess i never really thought of it that way. mine is super low, sometime i might wish for stock low. dang, now i guess i need dual cases. everytime i think she's almost done someone like you comes along and makes me need more parts!
i guess it'll never be finished. I'm already scheming on a tube\flat bed, would love a 3RZ swap, new leafs... on and on...

Take that 4.7 and slow it down 2.28 times and that's what I call badass! I normally use the 4.7 gears 95% of the time on most trails and just pop the front case into low if I need it. But there have been some trails (BV Carnage) that it stays in double low the entire time.

I can't even fathom trying to wheel the rocks and technical trails around here with stock low range. I like to go easy and enjoy the ride not bounce all over and smoke my clutch all day. I run 4.7 2nd gear most of the time on the trails around here but having the option to double down in the really nasty stuff is awesome.
