I test drove a 2001 Tundra (V8 SR5 with OR package). As I was coming to a stop, the engine stalled for no apparent reason. I was able to restart and go. Luckily I was going straight at the time because with no power steering, I could barely turn the wheel. The only thing that may be possible is something with the gas, since it was close to E (no gas light on, though). I love the way the truck drove, love the power, but this stalling problem bothers me. The dealer said they'd "look into it", but I know that means they will probably do nothing and hope it doesn't happen again.

Is this a known problem on these trucks? What could be the problem?

 

Ford has a problem like this on their 3/4-ton trucks, but Toyota doesnt.
Id bet that what happened is as you slowed down to stop, the fuel all flowed away from the fuel pickup, so the engine stalled. However, once the truck stopped, the fuel flowed back to the fuel pickup, so the engine had fuel again and would run.

I'm a bit curious about that no gas light.
Is that an issue with the Tundra? If it were me I think I'd avoid that truck and look for another one like it. Seems like you're asking for it to buy a vehicle that stalled on you during a test drive. If anything the fuel idiot light should have told you something was wrong.

At best you have an issue with the low fuel indicator.
Doesn't sound like a deal to me.

 

Youve also got to question a dealership that would send a potential customer out on a test drive in a truck that was on the verge of running out of gas.
You would think that someone who works there would take the initive and say to their boss, "Hey, that Tundra is really low on gas. Im going to take it to the gas station and put some gas in it, OK?"

I agree. I drove another one (a 2002) at the same dealer and it was also low on gas! Much lower however. The gas light was on on the 2002 model... and this one didn't stall on the same test drive.

I think something was wrong with the 2001. The truck should not cutout with the gas as low as it was. Looks like the truck may have been a "work truck" for someone in the past... rather dirty and beat-up.

 

Dealers will keep the cars low on gas so people don't joyride and put tons of miles on them. If they are full of gas the salespeople would drive them home all the time and rack up miles.

 

If the tank was low enough to cause you to stall, then the light should have been on. The fuel pick up is surrounded by an "inner tank" within the big tank, preventing sloshing and a loss of fuel, even when its low.

Huge red flag in my book. I would move on to the next one. Dime a dozen.
