Strange T100 noise

I have a 1996 T100 4x4 with 126000 miles. Recently I started noticing a peculiar noise. It sounds like a rubbing noise and I can only hear it when I'm driving. I notice it most at low speeds....5-35 mph. After that, road noise drowns it out. When I'm not moving there is no noise at all. It sounds like something is grinding against something else. I can hear it most near the center of the vehicle up under the dashboard but it's definately coming from the floor. I used a stethescope and by putting it against the metal part of the floor pan on the center hump I can hear it. I jacked up the rear end on stands and then got under with the wheels spinning and listened all over the transmission and the transfer case but the sound isn't coming from there. I can only hear it from inside the vehicle and only when the vehicle is moving.

It's driving me crazy because I can't find the source of the sound.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing it????

Thanks for the help.

Dried out speedo cable. Very common.

They can't be regreased but they can be replaced. It's worse when its cold, I barely could hear mine over the summer but now that the temp has dropped the noise is back.

It's not hurting anything so I just turn up the radio.

Well thanks. I'll check into that.

Any idea what the new speedo cable costs?

Thanks again.

your spedometer.. mph.. it should be right in front of you in the 95 model, on the 96 it should be on the right, next to your rpms
