Running Rough

Well, I hadn't used my T for a couple of weeks. Just started it up and drove down to wash it. It ran great. After washing, it started running really rough up to about 2800 rpm or a bit more. No water got into the engine compartment. Idle is down a bit and rough also.

Any ideas? It is so strange that it was running so smooth..then turned off for about 10 minutes, then started and it's running rough.

I don't really have an answer. Maybe the car wash was just a coincidence. Is it any better after sitting or driving for the last day or so? Is the fuel in the tank old?

Not knowing anything about the way T's are setup- is it possible to get water in the intake? If the T's are run off a distributor I'd check for condensation in the cap. That's all I got, anyone else?

I ran it again today. No better. No distributor. Again, thinking like you wrote, the washing is a coincidence and that it is probably a vacuum problem. It's a 97 T 4x4 totally stock. There is a vacuum line map on the inside of my hood. Thinking I will need to check each line. Any experience with this?

How long was the truck sitting? Could the fuel be stale? I had a smilar problem with mine after a week. But the symptoms went away after driving it a lot. Have you ever cleaned the throttle body? I would sugest that. Because if the idle motor has carbon in it, the truck will idle funny like you describe. To clean the intake let the motor warm up, pull the breather off and spray the intake with carb cleaner and scrub with an old tooth brush. Bolt everything back together and run the piss out of the truck. Hope this helps

Many thanks for the suggestions. First I am going to get some great gas...the tank is on just above a quarter...and I will run it a bit. If that doesn't fix it, I'll try the TB.

Try spraying your vacuum lines with Gumout, one at a time. If the fluid covers any crack in the line the idle will change.

Started the T up today to drive and get a full tank of new premium. It ran perfectly!? Used it for a couple of hours of errands and it was fine. Even before I put the good gas in. Strange.

Yes! Definitely cheaper than the stealer!

But now...I drove it again today and turned it off at my destination. After about 3 hours, I started it again to drive home. Well, for the first couple of minutes, it ran roughly again. Then, it ran fine after that. Very strange!

Hmm...okay I'm gonna go off on a limb here and say PCV valve is leaking somehow. Check that line and the valve itself, trust me on this, I just ran through my accord trying to figure out what the hell was causing the idle to crap out and it ended up being the valve was leaking a bit. On certain times it would idle alright, and other times it would be crap. Check that out and let us know.

It's running great.

Just new gas...driving it more....and all is normal???

Guess I'll just wait and see if it happens again.
