Offset for Sequoia and 18" wheel question

I am about to purchase a 2002 Sequoia and really like the 17" anthracite wheels from the '03 and '04 models, but my budget keeps me away from those years. 1) What are the proper offsets for these wheels? I am looking at some aftermarket wheels; 2) what do you all think of 18" wheels on a Sequoia? Will it ride too hard? I know this is a hardcore off-roading forum, but I will most likely not take this beast on any trails. I'm mostly looking for good snow performance and adept on-road handling.

I would love to hear thoughts on this.

Thank you!

Ah, never is any question not "hard core" .

Sequoia offset is 4 5/8", anytime you go up in rim size, you sacrifice a tad bit of ride comfort (since you are reducing sidewall action), but sometimes you increase cornering capabilities. If you pick up this month's Consumer Reports, they have an excellent article explaining the idea of moving up in plus sizes.

If you prefer the online article, here it is. Hope that helps

I have 18's on my 4Runner and have really enjoyed the handling. I rarely go off anything more than a gravel road, so I was really concerned with Off-road tire options.

Mohamed - thanks for your specs and the CU article! I'll check it out.

Momo - do you find the ride with 18" wheels/tires to be a lot harder? I know the 4Runner, new and third gen, has a noticeably firmer ride than the Sequoia.

I don't know that it is harder, but it is more firm, if that makes sense. I am not sure how to describe it besides it handles great. The car I had before my 4Runner was a Maxima, so of course it wasn't as firm as that, but being that it is a truck I expected a little bit of a rough ride, but was surprised at the handling.

I know that prpbably didn't help much. You should see if the dealership has a Sequoia on the lot with the TRD 18" wheels and take it for a spin.

im not exactly sure about what the offset is on the sequoia, but i think the 18" wheel/tire should ride just as good as the 17" wheels would. if you're going w/ an 18" tire the recommended size would be 285/55/18. the difference in sidewall is only about 0.4". my dad acutally has 20" wheels on his sequoia, and it rides pretty good, im sure the 18" should ride better. the only bad thing about going with an 18" wheel is the cost of tires, there are only a handfull of tires in that size, and they cost a grip.

gn86er,

Thanks for your help. I actually ended up snagging a set of four 17" 5 spoke split rim wheels on eBay for not a whole lot of moola. Seventeens it is!

sweet! how much did you end up getting them for? id like to have a set of 17" for my 4runner. i tried the 01-02 sequoia wheels on, and they look a bit akward, but i bet the gray 17" would be sweet.

gn86er,

I got them for $686 with shipping. I think these were originally for the Tundra since they are silver and not the gray/anthracite that came on the 03/04 Sequoias. I prefer the gray but the price was right, and you can't go wrong with silver.

FYI, Southern Exchange was selling a set of 18" OZ wheels in a BBS-style mesh pattern with a deep offset and Pirelli Scorpion tires on eBay. They did not sell. If anyone wants the info, let me know and I can pass it on. These were the wheels that prompted me to ask the original question on this thread.

Also, my 99 4Runner came with the cool 16" 5 spoke wheels. I have been thinking of putting the 16" Sequoia wheels on the 4Runner when I sell it, with plans to sell the 16" 5 spokers separately. If you're interested, let me know.

Thanks for the interest, Mohamed, but do you guys really want to see photos of a very stock silver Sequoia? At least let me get those 5 spoke rims on it, instead of those Tinker Toy 16" wheels. Reminds me of the first gen Pathfinder wheels.

If I get a chance, I'll post a photo or two of my 4Runner with the 4 rail Yakima rack, Kargoholder hitch rack, and PIAA XT drving lights. I'm gonna miss that truck...
