I have a 2001 Sequoia 4x4 and the service and repair manuals.

In the maintenance section MA-10 it shows a diagram on where to lube.

It says to use lithium based grease except the double cardan joint. What is the double cardan joint? I thought a cardan joint is the same as a spider joint, and a double cardan joint is 2 cardan joints close together. I don't see anything like this on the bottom of my truck?

Also the manual says to "repack the drive shaft thrust bush grease" see page SA-21. SA-21 doesn't mention any thrust bushing, its about re-assembling the front drive half shafts coming out the of the front diff. Are they referring to repacking the inboard joint and boot on these shafts?

Also the zerk fittings on the front drive shaft are recessed into the spider joint and my grease gun won't lock onto them. Is this a common problem? What am I supposed to do?

These are probably simple questions, but I don't know anything about 4x4's.

I hit every zerk I can find on my driveshaft and the front one as well with Pennzoil, I got 4-packs of the little tubes from K-Mart and I use the little gun/pistol with a flexible hose to access all the zerks, sometimes they hide if it is in the wrong position so you'd have to move the truck. I don't disassemble anything under there to lube, Toyota would not make us do that, so I just hit them all up, starting from the rear and work my way forward. I have an 04 Thundra so I have no idea if it would be any different from the Sequoia, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to take anything apart to "repack" the drive shaft thrust bushing grease. I hope this helps. I hit all my zerks under there every 5000 miles/every oil change as that is what the book tells me to do as I tow and do it all.

 

Does the little gun get into the ones that a regular grease gun is too big for between the joints

 

It isn't so much that the gun is smaller, rather, I was thinking that the flexible line attatched to the gun makes getting it on the zerk easier as I have NO problem getting my gun's nozzle to fit onto any of the zerks under my 2004 Thundra.

 

I'll have to try it. The gun I have won't go on because the end is too large to fit between the jointd and onto the zerk

 

You'll need a "needle" adapter for the front drive shaft joints. Check NAPA... I got mine there and it works perfect!
