My brother used to to drive a 98' Ford Explorer until it got totalled, about 3 weeks before mine was...

Now he got a 01' Tundra with the TRD Offroad Package. He loves the truck, and is thinking of putting bigger tires on it. He wants to put 285's on it, and he thinks they will fit, I disagree. He's in the Navy, so he's not doing any wheeling by any means, he just wants a more aggressive looking truck.

So do you think 285's could fit under a '01 Tundra TRD?

rear, YES.

front, NO.

lift the front about 2" to even it up with the rear and then they might fit.

Well, I've got 295's on my Tundra and they fit. Don't know the differences
between the '01 and '05 DC though.

I have to admit there seems to be only about 1/4" clearance.

 

you have 295/70-16's???? looks more like 295/40-20's in the avatar...

the width is a big deal because of the backspacing and the upper a-arm, but i was referring to the amount of vertical clearance to fit them under the fender.

 

I have 295/45-20's. The clearance for width leaves only about 1/4" between
the tire and the springs. The diameter of these wheels+tires only 30.45" so
I think there is a good bit more room for diameter but not with tires this wide
unless you have some significant offset (otherwise you'll be rubbing the
springs).

295/70-16's will have a diameter of 32.26" so I would expect they would
fit but like I say you'll need some offset at that width.

I would expect my wheels have some built-in offset to accomidate the width.
With standard 16" wheels I'm not sure you could even fit 295/60's.

 

he has standard toyota 16x7's with 4.375" backspacing.

he wants to put 285/75-16's on it (32.8" x 11.2")

my suggestion was to raise the front to level it out and that will not only make it look better, but it will give him the increased clearance up front so he won't rub the 285's on every turn and bump.

however, the 4runners and Tacomas have the same spec wheels and nearly identical upper a-arms and have trouble fitting 285's due to the backspacing on the OEM wheels.

 

285/75's will rub on stock suspension and rims. To help minimize any rubbing, your brother should lift the front 2"-2.5" and get 8" wide rims with 3 5/8" of BS.

 

my moms tundra has a revtek lift 2-1/2 inch lift and clears 285s on 16x8 rims it looks really good

 

Is that the size and backspacing for the tires to clear good from the suspension?? I'm lookin in to new rims and I want 285s on them too. And I have a 2.5" lift on its way.

 

Without lifting 1.75"s - 285's will rub like hell and they'll probably rub a little after the lift without properly backspaced 8" rims. When my front-end was IFS, I ran siped BFG M/T 255X85X16's on stock rims with coilovers cranked up 1.75 inches and they never touched going forward - backing up cranked over hard left I'd just barely touch. The 285's are a little over an inch wider than the 255 but about a quarter inch shorter and as far as I'm concerned the 255 is a little better off road than the 285 as I rarely spun a tire on climbs, whereas the fat meats started howling 2/3 of the way up a sharp incline.

 

Okay so what is a recommend backspacing for a aftermarket 16X8 rim for our tundras?

Stock backspacing is 3 5/8 typically, 4" is just right for keeping it under the fender flares (but I have the wider body-colored ones). Not rubbing even with the steering maxed. 4.5" is still fine- you might just go past your fender flares a bit.

16" wheel will JUST clear the front brake calipers on an 05. I'd go 17" if you can, not much price difference once you go over 16s.

275-65-R16 is the max that will fit. 4" or more backspacing.

 

heeh... i put a 2.5" spacer in front and aal's in rear. bfg ATs.. 285/75/16s all around and they rubbed pretty bad AT FULL TURN ONLY! i dont know the backspacing but i had the stock toyota steel rims on v6 access cabs.. and i switched to 16" MT 2 classics.. and now they rub against the fenders and mudflaps (now taken off), only rubs agains front fenders. rear is ok. i think ur bro will be fine with the 3" spacer.

 

I am running 285/75r16 Yokohamas on my 02 Tundra. I have a 2" spring lift in the front. The tires rub on the frame at full steering lock with stock wheels but I just live with it. I figure that I am going under 5 moh at full lock anyway...
