Angry 2001 Sequoia Overdrive taking a dump

I just bought an 01 Sequoia with 104K on the clock. It's a 2wd limited and it's perfect for hauling all my damn kids around and looking like a total suburbanite like I'm supposed too. I like that it can tow and it's bigger than the titanic. It feels like a tank to drive.

The chick wanted $8500 for it. It books for $12.5K so I took it for a spin, everything seemed great except that the A/C was not working. I offered $7.5K and she bit. It cost me $960 to get the compressor replaced and get cold air in it. I fixed all the little problems in the interior and all the buttons now work. I did a tune up and it pepped up a bit and ran smooth. Life is great until...

About two days after purchase I noticed a quiet growling that I could feel through the pedal after getting up to about 35 miles per hour. Over the course of a couple days it got worse and I nailed it down too fourth gear, then figured out that when I turn the O/D off the noise goes away.

This is a pretty bad noise now with a scrape scrape scrape noise when slowing around a corner and a nice growl with a metal sound under light acceleration in overdrive. Without the OD engaged there is no noise.

I've pretty much conceded that the Tranny is toast. This sucks, but I'm not ready to throw in the towel (I can't really I've got money tied up in this now).

I've been told the tranny is a A340F, is this correct?

How much should I expect to pay for a used replacement?

What is the short list of donar vehicles that I should be looking at?

Is there some unknown factor (to me) that is going to bite me in the ass when I replace this myself?

Thanks for you help

have you gone to the dealership to have them check it.. the same thing happened to my father's 04 tundra and it turned out to be the overdrive sensor.... course a month later the rear ring gear sheared, and then a week after that the tranny died.. but have someone look at it b4 you drop some big bucks

Would a sensor grind? It sounds like a bad crank bearing or something big like that. Best I can describe is if you were to try and stop with just metal brake pads on a rusty rotor (but not that loud).

Regarding A340 series transmissons

I have a 2000 Toy Tundra SR5 it has a A340E transmisson and according to several transmission shop the overdrive gear is always an issue. I have on 99,228 miles on the transmisson. My problem started when my son installed a leveling kit and Rancho shocks front and rear on my truck. Taking it for a test drive we there was two bump, thud, or thinking I ran over something i actually pulled over to see. After the test drive when exiting the freeway my son heard a groaning noise coming from the transmisson at first it sounded like a mini jake brake. I checked the fluid and no metal flakes, so i did a trans service and used stop slip with the trans fluid. The thumping stopped but I still get the groan. I then realize when I turn off the overdrive gear when slowing down there no groaning at all so i presuming its the overdrive gear.
