does anything need to be done with the electronics to make them waterproof?? I see travis's rig is up over the axles...

i remember that was what always killed my RC's....getting them wet.

so water, sand, mud, snow, ice? these things have no affect?
i'd like to be able to get into this lol

Also, do these things have like, low gear and high gear? as in, can they go pretty fast when need be, or are they restricted by gearing to a crawl speed?

Camo you do want to water proof your electronics if you want to get as deep as superbleeder did. If you go to rccrawler.com there are a ton of write ups on how to water proof everything. I haven't done anything to mine and have run in deep snow but do stay out of any water up over the axle just to be safe.

As far as a gear box there are some out there Tamiya has their 3speed gear boxes 2hi 4wd and 4low you need a 3/4 channel radio and about $600 but a great scale look with either a Ford f350 or a 1st Gen Toyota. I build mine for just under $400 then spent about another $100 on some upgrades but its still mostly stock but still crawls good enough for me.

yeah I put a good bit of effort into completely waterproofing my rig

for starters, all of the electronics are housed in RadioShack project boxes, closed up with a seal at the lid, and then saddle bag mounted on the sliders

then the steering servo was taken apart and stuffed with dialectic grease at both the electronics and the gearing side. after that it was covered in silicon at the joints

and lastly, all of my batteries got silicone at the ends and wrapped in electrical tape

I did these two 7 cell packs as well a little later

then you ALSO have to crack open the transmission and axles and stuff them full of marine grease to keep everything from rusting up on you...

but that's pretty much it! you don't have to worry too much about brushed motors being killed by water. it hurts their performance a little, but they'll still run.

Travis...
Love the rig, did a great job on the lights!!!

Question, have you thought about switching to a Li-Po battery instead of Ni-Cd?

I have, but for the time being I'm spending money on other upgrades other than batteries and chargers just purchased a DX2S along with a receiver, and a full set of RC4WD Boggers, both used so I got a good deal on them. Next will be a motor, and then I'll start looking into a new ESC and going 3 or maybe 4s lipo. but the stock Axial AE-2 ESC can only handle 2s, so in my opinion it wouldn't be worth any upgrading at this time for me

Travis, that is a nice RC you have there!

I had posted earlier in this thread that I have eyed the Losi mini 1/18 rock crawler, and then the 1/10 LED crawler.
I saw something this morning that has changed my mind.
The Losi ones are nice, but they are made to go slow and crawl.
I saw some pics this morning from a Pomona Off Road coverage of an exhibit show this weekend, and some father had just bought his kid this.
http://www.axialracing.com/ftp/wraith/index.html
Wraith from Axial, and it is 2.4 GHz like my Losi stuff I have ran before.

This thing goes fast, and it looks like it would be fun.

A couple more videos at the above URL, and also YouTube has several.

Not sure what it cost yet, I need to investigate, as I think this is what I finally want to buy.

I posted that one earlier in this thread - it looks awesome.

If I get something like this, it would probably be the Wraith. I don't want to be limited to only crawling.

I saw it listed at the bottom of my URL above for around $365 or so.
Amazon has them, but do not offer it as a Prime item, so I would be better off having my hobby shop which is about two miles from me order it.
http://www.amazon.com/Axial-Racing-W...8167921&sr=8-1
It has LED lighting too, and you can get another LED controller for it to let the LEDs do more.

Not seeing it on the local hobby shops page, may have to mail order it.
I think this is the one to get though.

It comes with everything you need too, right? Minus batteries and a charger?

At $635, I would certainly hope so!

They call it a RTR, but not completely true.
You do need the 7.2 Lipo and a charger.
I would have to look and see what my Losi batteries are, they might work.

I have been watching this Canadian guy's vids for the past half hour or so.
I think he has around six of them, and this is the unboxing.
I really want this bad boy now, gotta wait until around 10 or 11 am for my shop to see if they carry Axial or not.

The suspension looks much stiffer than I would have expected.

Keep in mind I used a T-Maxx for about four years that absorbed just about everything from rocks to coke cans, so I'm sure these are different.

I definitely want...but I want new tires more...I think...

I have to pay for it today for the store to order it, then I might have it by the weekend.
Getting it for $350, a tad cheaper than other stores.
Then we need to look into batteries.

I am so bringing this thing to work, lots of areas outside to try it out.

You're getting the Wraith for $350?! If that's truly the cost of it, I can buy it today! I thought it was around $500-$600.

Retail is $365.
I see links posted from the plugin do not turn into hyperlinks, weird.
One more reason to push the VB plugin on tech here Fink.

Found another review
http://www.bigsquidrc.com/axial-wraith-review/
it says to use this battery up front instead of the regular battery in the back.
It gives the rig better stability.
http://www.maxamps.com/Lipo-5200-74-Saddle.htm
You lay it over the tranny hump I think.

I will ask the shop today if they can get that battery in.
Also here is a good tip for the Wraith.
