new gears in new england
I'm trying to find somewhere near Maine where I can get gears installed at a resonable price. Also what kind of gears would you guys recommend. The plug mysteriously fell out of my diff and its pretty well screwed so its time to re gear it

Yukon gears are always quality. Trail-gear make some more budget gears (bout half the price)
Or you could look in junkyards for 4runners or pickups with 4.56 or 4.88 and swap whole 3rds (probably the easiest)
What do you want to re gear it to?

Well I was gonna run 33's so that would be 4.88s I guess. We really have nothing up here in the junk yards as it is I drive three hours to get little stuff like the cupholder clips and various caps like power steering. I can't seem to find a 4.88 4runner around here. And I don't know if I could regear it myself?

Gears
I noticed people mentioning Zuk, but if you dont know how to contact him, i put his website below. Zuk is one of few people I'd be fully confident in setting up my own diff, other than myself, my guys, or guys I've trained:

As for gears to use, I am biased, but I'm also quite experienced. With Nitro gears you will get a consistant quality product. Not the same for all other brands. The reason is that Toyota gears are the Nitro line's "A" movers and lots of volume moved. Also the nitro gears do away with old substandard part numbers and use the latest greatest designs where applicable, IE bigger splines and pinion head thicknesses, etc. Others tend to use multiple sources which may mean good one time bad another, hard to say. For example I recently had a customer send me 2 3rd members with brand x or maybe you could say "Y" gears, that had "RICHMOND" stamped into them along with broken teeth and a spun outer pinion bearing.
When it comes to gears a lot of it comes down to who is doing it, but its not the only factor. We build THOUSANDS of diffs every year, and rarely see anything back, even when abused. Yet others with the same products may not have the same results. This is because gears require the know how and experience. It takes about 500-1000 setups before I'd consider anyone "experienced" at setting up diffs, this just doesnt happen in a std general repair shop setting. Sure there are a few sharp guys with attention to detail that are quite capable to do it right, but it takes a lot to have "seen it all". I've overseen over 20,000 setups, and have not seen it all yet.

That's a lot of setups haha I thought about trying to do it myself just for moneys sake but its worth it to get it done right. I wish I lived in Washington and not maine. It seems like everyone who knows what there doing lives on the other side of the country

from what I remember Zuk has retired from doing gear installs...plus he didn't do IFS housing...could be wrong...
