I just put up a list of the things I am going to do to get to what I want..... the twins will keep the egt's down at a good level for long lasting power... your right about the 4bt being the same as the 6bt... it's just 2 cyl shorter... It will have a intercooler... the reliability will be great!!! no concerns with the mods I will be making... this is a really tough engine and can take a bunch more punishment than I will give it... I am expecting in the low 20's as far as mpg (this guess comes from other builds I have witnessed and know of) I should be between 275-300hp with well over 500ft lbs of torque... probably closer to 600.... its going to be a fun build!!!

Thanks for the in depth report. How is that going to affect mpg? Curious to see what these mills can give.

for shocks king shocks and fox shocks are the best you can get. they are rebuildable as well. but they are not cheap.

A buddy of mine is running the same engine, with upgraded pistons 60lb valve springs and pretty similar mods on the rest, in a early 90's chevy 1500. He gets 21-24 mpg half city half hwy when the truck is light... pulling his 25' camper it drops to 13-16mpg... He's been running it for about 3 years now and loves it.

what do you guys think as far as the transfer case? D spicer 18, D 20, NP205? I would like to think the NP205 may be an overkill for this engine...but what about some of the Dana's like the 18? or any other? If my thinking is right, the tundra tcase won't be able to handle the kind of torque this engine will produce....??

today I had a buddy of mine offer up a perfectly fine 4L60E trans for free!!!! JACKPOT!!! I knew the nv4500 is the more common trans behind the cummins but 4L60E is damn tough and can handle a bunch of torque also... and free is damn good to me.... so I will have to find a good matching tcase and axles... this tranny came out of a 2000 chevy... the hunt is on!!! he will be bringing down the tranny on his next trip from Arkansas...

........EDIT.........

ok... kinda disapointing but after more digging, and recomendations from a few others, the 4L60e isn't the right choice behind this engine....with a bunch of mods to the transmision it may be able to work but will still be a chance... I would rather buy a tranny that is to tough than one that I have to try and make tough enough... so with that, the hunt for a good trans is on again...

aight... after some conversating and digging, I think I'm down to 3 choices for the tranny... 4L80E, 47rh, or Allison 1000.... and am going to try to find a NP241HD tcase or two

This is going to happen brothas... trust me.. and as long as i'm welcome, i'll be adding to this thread all of the build.. I am working with monster transmissions now on this build... I was going to attempt the rebuild on a junker transmission but after seeing all that is intailed, i will leave that section up to the pros... the guy at Monster that I am dealing with has suggested the 4L80E as one of the best for this application... so that might be the route.. i'm waiting on a few quotes from them and have just emailed them the specs/mods i'm doing to this engine...

6bt vs. 4bt... two things led me to the 4bt... weight and mpg... I will do better in both of those departments with the 4bt and still be able to produce better power than I can get out of a stock 8cyl yota... with that, i'm sold!!! I can't say that I am not tempted to go with the 6BT because the engines are cheaper than the 4bt and they are really easy to get ahold of.... I can mod the 4bt with a few things and still get over 20mpg and be producing plenty power... i wouldn't hardly be able to get that with a stock 6bt

I've settled on Dana 60, 3 link with panhard front....and Dana 70 with a triangulated 4 link rear or leafs on the rear... I will use a doubler Tcase... 241/241 is my route (copying a doubler build from pirate) THE HUNT IS ON JACK!!!!!

Soon as the roads open back up from this hurricane and I can get back home, I have 3 aluminum fabrication jobs to finish up....Then it's time to start shopping.... Here is what I have settled on and will be looking for:

Dana 60 front
Dana 70 rear (may settle for a 60 rear)
4bt
Two NP241 Transfer cases
4L80E tranny
Tundra (have 3 to look at within the next week two 06 and one 05)

I have a line on a early 90's F350 that I have to go check out...may be able to put a check next to my axle shopping on the list....maybe a tcase too... Also have a line on a 4L80E with 100k miles on it for $150.. I have a 4bt to look at in Mississippi that I found online for $800... can't wait!!!

Sounds like an awesome plan. Are you going to run a stand alone controller with the 4L80E. I wish you were closer to here because there is a guy here in town that just parted out 2 F-250's and a Dodge and is selling the axles for $40 a pop. I'll be watching this!

It'll be slow going for a little bit... I have 3 more aluminum fab jobs to complete, home repairs due to hurricane Isaac, and trying to get things ready for trapping season...but I am still picking up parts as I go... It will be a stand alone controller...

I could have gotten a 6bt last week for $400... I passed on it but it was hard to do so...only because I know it will fit in the Tundra...but I kept telling myself 20-25mpg or 15-19mpg... so I will keep with the 4BT and some mods
