Question Your thoughts on the Tacoma Prerunner

Hi, I'm new here.

I've been thinking about getting a Toyota Tacoma Prerunner Xtracab.

I'd just like to know your opinions on it.

Thx

They are fine if you don't need 4x4. There is the optional rear locker. When my wife lived in North Carolina (before i married her of course) she almost bought a prerunner, good thing that she didn't because 2wd trucks don't move in the snow!

I don't really do to much off-roading. It doesn't snow to much around here either.

It's a good truck to have if you don't need the 4wd. I'd have no problem owning one. Less front end problems to worry about.

It can do very mild offroading since it has the same clearance and tires that a 4x4 have. It's when the front end gets hung up you'll really be stuck - but you can get one with the TRD elocker and that should be pretty nice. The prerunners that race teams use are usually 2wd with a locker in the rear and a suspension designed to give a ton of articulation. Go off that premise and try to figure out how you can improve the suspension. BTW - a slightly used 4x4 will retail for the same $$$.

Whatever, I have a 1978 F250 2wd with the 460 V8. It has a fiberglass shell on it that must weigh about 350-400 lbs, and tried 12 bags of salt (at 50 lbs each), i still slid all over the place.

An open differential (no locker or limited slip) will send all the power to the wheel that gets the least amount of traction. (Using a quote from the movie"my cousin vinny") if you are stuck in the mud, one wheel will spin and the other will do nothing. A limited slip uses clutches to minimize the power going to the spinning wheel and sends some of the power to the wheel with the traction, this is a full-time setup.
A locker is only used a low speeds, it lockes the two rear wheels to each other and they both turn at the same rate. This should only be used when you are either stuck or going through something that you think that you may get stuck in. It cannot be used all the time since your wheels move at different rates when making turns.

I hope that makes sense

Welcome to the show!
A lot of pre-runner owners will remove the pre runner emblem off the back and throw on TRD stickers on the sides. You could have the coolest truck in town and nobody will know your a Poser, untill you have to put out. It could be worse. If your ever in a sticky situation and you need 4WD and it's not there. That's how accidents can happen. But if your used to dry concrete than thats your truck!

What the H-E-double-hockey-sticks is a "pre-runner" anyway?

I think the term refers to the trucks that run the course, like a baja course, before the actual race takes place.

I just noticed in your sig above that you listed a "can of fix a flat"...I wouldn't use that stuff if I were you. You are much better off putting your spare on. That stuff will eat up the inside of your tire. Definitely only use it as an absolute last resort.

Thanks, i didnt know that the "pre-runner"

I have had trips where i'll get couple flat tires and use the spare tire and the tire plugs and as last resort use the can of fix o flat.

That's cool, like I said, just use it as the last option! Couldn't hurt to keep just in case..
