I know it wasn't many years that had them. Not sure on the years specifically though.

My 1991 has the stock carrier on it.

I've seen a lot of pics of 2nd gen hilux surfs with the rear spare tire carrier, including those with the 2.4L turbo diesel engines. I guess when the 2nd gen came out, the rear spare tire carrier was already an option.

I think it was 90-92 but maybe 93. I took one off another 91 for my 91.

You can buy aftermarket tire carriers. Why limit what you can buy 4Runner-wise when the tire carrier can be added on later.

I've got one on my 94, but of course it came off of a 91. I've seen them on 90, 91 and early 92's. Saw a early 92 at the yard and it had a swing arm tire carrier and underneath all the hardware for a spare (Can you say duel spares) as if they don't sag enough in the rear already.

They were only offered with the factory 31" tire option as I recall.

Spare tire carrier

Having owned 2 previous 2nd gen...the only years i know of from owning them were from 90-91...perhaps in the US they extended it to 92 or 93...PS: I have been contemplating adding the 2nd gen tire carrier to a 3rd gen limited...i like to idea of an accessible tire quickly, do you know if anyone has ever tried this modification?

Used to be a writeup on the ORC Toyota tech section:

http://www.off-road.com/toyota/toyota.html

Was written by Chris Geiger. Basically you need to weld in a bunch of bracing inside the rear corners to install the carrier.

With the help of a buddy we chopped some metal strips up and they were used as the inner bracings with equally HD hardware. Not a problem in the past year its been installed. Been tested through some very rough terrain and looks great. Stock only used tin bracing on the inside tac welded on. scary.
