They are great dry pavement tire because they are very quiet and ride smoothly but if you get into any kind of a mud/snow situation they SUCK.
The only tires Id go with would be Bridgestone Dueller ATs. I had those on my '91 4Runner and they were great. It NEVER fishtailed on me and the only time I need to use 4-wheel-drive was when the snow was deeper than 6". Great tires, although somewhat expensive!

I've got BFG KO's on my 2WD 99 Runner and love them. I even bumped up a size from the stock to a 32.5" tire (with a little fender trimming). Really gives a nice agressive look to the car. Fills out the wheel wells nicely. If your wondering about people giving you crap for having "offroad" type tires on a 2WD, I wouldn't worry about it. No one gives me any. I think it would take full out mud terrians to draw any slack from people. I def recommend Matt.

Definatley go with mud tires! Don't even bother with the A/T's. Especially if you don't mind rooad noise. I have Pro Comp muds on my 4x2 Runner and it's awsome! I just ordered new rims and am getting my bigger tires in August. I am going with Firestone Destination M/T's because they are agressive looking like mud tires, but ride and sound more like A/T's. When I get them on, I'll post some ratings on them. But I have heard nothing but good things about the Firestones. Most say that they get bewteen 40-50K out of them... much like the BF M/T that everyone has, but supposedly with a much quieter and softer ride. Check out my rig and let me know what you think... my truck is similar to yours.

definitely gowith a/t tires. They look a thousand times better. I put the firestone destination a/t tire on my runner a year ago and love them. A couple of my friends with bfg a/t like mine better. There is a slight increase in road noise, but you have to strain to hear it anyways. Took my 4runner mudding andthey were great.

Well....I thought it was a balancing issue with the Revos so I returned them and spent another $130 on a set of Cross Terrains. Same vibration that I had with the Revos above 65 mph. It's still present. At this point, I've given up. The only common denominator here is that both the new Revos I tried and the Cross Terrains are 265/75/16s and the two sets I had before were 265/70/16s. This shouldn't make any difference at all and there are numerous people on here running 75s with no issues. The truck has been inspected mechanically several times and NUMEROUS balances on the Hunter machine by a trusted, knowledgable shop and still the vibration. I've given up and am just living with it even though it is absolutely annoying as hell!!!
BTW...I miss the Revos and knowing what I know now I would have never returned them. The wet traction is so much better with the Revos vs. the Cross Terrains that it's sickening.

I love my Nittos but if my Runner was a pavement pounder I would pick something that has a better ride and wears better over the whole life of the tire maybe like some Revos or Michelin LTXs.
