WOT redline rev limit not shifting

1995 4Runner with a 1998 5vz and a340f auto. At or near redline the engine sputters. It will usually shift into the next gear after a sputtering delay. Today during a few WOT pulls it did not want to shift at all until I let off the throttle a hair. I have no codes other than rear o2. Trans fluid has been changed within last 5k. It shifts beautifully other than this.

When making more power then the ECU/Transmission was designed for it is not uncommon to hit the limiter for a second before it shifts but it should just bounce once or maybe twice in most cases (such as my truck did before I built the trans).

In your case it seems that it is not even trying to shift for some reason. Overdrive is turned on right? Tried it in both ECT modes?

You are gonna be messing with the transmission anyways with the shift kit, I would honestly not spend a lot of time worrying about it until after that.

Plus lifting during the shift is a good idea anyways as the transmissions are not that strong and lifting for that split second can go a long way to saving the clutches in my experience.

It seems like it's hitting the rev limiter a little low (based on the tach in those videos) which is odd.

You might try slackening the adjustment on the kick-down cable slightly.

Don't forget the basics. Like trans fluid being 2 qts low. Problem solved.

Not unless you know WHY you were 2 quarts low.

Well that didn't fix it. After the valve body upgrade and adding fluid, it still does it a little. Also I'm red-lining at 5,100 rather than the 5,500 everybody else redlines at. I can just drive around it.

The rev limiter will vary by year, I have seen reports from 5k to 6k.

A quick bounce on the limiter is fairly common with more power but not what you were seeing.

I had that problem on an a340 as well. Never fixed it, it didn't get worse or better I just knew if I had it floored I would have to let up slightly to get it to shift. Mine was stock with no performance mods. Probably not helpful but just saying!

No, that is helpful. Lets me know it just a common issue and to put up with it. Sometimes I try to fix things that aren't broke I'll bet money it was bouncing on the limiter so long because it was 2 qts low. I'm ok with it not revving any higher. I'd rather not push my luck on EGTs and AFRs with a 170k motor.
