I for one would not want to plumb into my power steering line (that is how they hook up) to use a hydraulic unit.
More hoses, posible leaks down the road.

The electric winch is well proven in the field, and only two wires to hook up.

I like my winch, and the very first time I used it, it saved the day getting that 4Runner unstuck in the snow.

Electric is the only way to fly. PTOs and Hydros can't get you out of every hairy situation.

O.k...From word of mouth I would have to agree that most people that I've talked to or heard have to say that warn is the best...But what about someone that doesn't have alot of money to spend on a good winch...Is there a close second? and what model? I mean my truck weighs around 5,300 lbs...Do I really need an 8 or a 9,000lb winch to work effectively?

 

Absolutely, the rule of thumb for winch buying is to get a winch rated at 1.5 times the weight of your truck, for you that equals 7950 if you are sure about your weight figure. That means you are barely squeaking by with an 8000 pound winch. I would recommend you get at least this:

Can anyone post a link to that Prado Bull Bar that was talked about earlier in this thread. I don't remember evering having seen one. I would eventually like to get a winch, but mounting it is another story. I just don't know how I want to do it. As a matter of fact (since I'm feeling lazy), can someone post a link to the ARB, TMJ (?), Prado and multi-mount?

My Warn M 8000 has been good to me in the 1 year i've had it.

It is pretty slow but it gets the job done. Winching is not a race, who cares how fast it goes? I got the 8000 because my truck only weighs 4085 pounds full of fuel, tools, gear, myself, camper shell, and 300 pounds of firewood.

There is a reason for the price difference between MileMarker electrics and Warns. You get what you pay for. Namely reliability and durability. There are Warn electric winches out there still going strong for longer than I have been alive. MileMarker electric winches cannot touch that testimony.

Actually we tested it out on Jim's (mytruck) '89 truck to see how it worked, but the video here was an actual rescue.
Matt had buried his nose in the snow pretty good.

 

Well I guess that since the Milemarker electric winches are still a pretty recent product, then I will have to wait and see. Worse comes to worst, I will relegate it to rear duty (have to get a rear mount fabbed to go behind my bumper) and replace it in the Badlands tube bumper with a Warn later. Got my fingers crossed. I know that POPS XJ had one on his ride, and he pulled me out of the snow in February with no problem except it was rather slow.
