dang what? and why are you talking about downsizing??? Rubbing really depends on what brand and type of tire you get PLUS the wheels backspacing and width.
For the most part, with a little trimming, you can slap 33's (285's) on there with stock everything and still drive the streets....then add suspension/lift later if you plan to wheel.

 

yea i guess your right, there is an offroad store around here that does pretty good lift work. i suppose i could always just ask them and they could tell me what i can fit w/o rubbing to bad. i really just didn't want to lift it just yet

 

I had very slight rubbing issues on turns with tires/rims listed in my sig. I trimmed the inner area of the oem plastic fender flare. The trimming I did with a pair of tin snips (super easy) and it is not visible unless you stick your head under there and look for it.

 

not on his 01 he wont, if he had a 99 he might be able to put on 33s with trimming

hed have to cut the firewall and crap to fit 33s on an 01. they are that low!!!

You can fit 285s under the stock suspension but it's a hassle (rubbing will occur period) and any off roading is hampered w/o a lift and you have to either get a rear mount for your spare or stick it inside.

I agree. My '02 is one of the lowest models made. Before my lift, I test fitted 285's and there was no way they were going to work, so I settled with 265's. Even with my 3" lift, I will probably need to do some trimming of the front valance and the inside corner of the running boards.

MAYBE if you're not planning to steer the rig much or take it anywhere off road, you'd be fine, but I really doubt it. Any flexing of the front suspension would make them rub, even with a lift. I can't even imagine it working without one.

 

Im going to go out on a limb and say it must have varied by model and trim. I have an 02 and we compared my springs to my buddies 01 and he had less coils wraps than I.

You definitely DO NOT want a tire that will rub (this means go w/ 265/75s unless you want to modify). I had 285/75s on a full size lifted GMC SIearra and they rubbed. Its really frustrating to hear the inside of your wheel well getting destroyed on small drops/bumps. Get tires that fit or be prepared to modify to make them fit. 285s will not fit w/o mods. If you disagree w/ this staement prove it. I doubt even the tallest stock 99 will be truly functional w/ 285s.

Does your's sit higher? I know my neighbor's '02 still is pretty short even compared to my '97. My '99 looks like it has a lift compared to most other stock Runners.

 

It certainly does now! Before it was higher than the other silver runner in the picture, not much but it was higher tires were 265's and similar design. Currently 3"+ lift and 1" BL on 295.75.16's.

but an 01 will never be able to put 285s on without some sort of fiberglass fenders in the front or something of that sort.

i believe the 265/75r16 to be the best (and biggest) for a stock 97 4runner...WITH the SR5 fenderflarez....check my picz......out of curiosity, haz anyone put wheel spacerz on a stock 3rd gen to widen the truck?...it that lame to do with no lift?

 

 

to clear a 285/75 you need a 3" inch suspension lift and a 1" inch body lift to clear fully with no rubbing.

i ran 285/75's with no body lift for 6 months and ripped up the plastic fender lining and had the front tire hit the fender and rip the trim off.

i just installed the body lift last night trust me you need the extra inch. heres a pic
