wierd engine noise

2000 4runner sr5 2wd 3.4l auto.

Got a weird engine noise only in drive like a rattle or pinging. Not at normal throttle only when I get on it. Changed spark plugs and wires thinking it was a bad ping. Still same noise after.

Any ideas on what to check next?

Bad gasoline can cause this. How long has it been doing it?

Run the tank down and fill up with quality fuel from a well used station.
Did it start after you filled up from a station?

I had a noise like that when I got on it. I was a loose heat shield behind the engine. I bent it a bit with a long pry bar to get it to stop. 99 taco 3.4 w/auto sr5 trd.

I have had a couple similar experiences.
The first was with heat shields that had 1 of the tack welds crack. Eventually another tack cracked and I could hear it at idle.
The second was the lower bolts on my fan shroud. They came undone and when I would get on the gas I could hear a strange tink tink tack tack sound. After awhile the noise started to sound like I was about to throw a rod.
Both were easy fixes, but a mystery for awhile.
