wich obdii protocol fro my 98 4runner?

im trying to read codes from my 4runner but none of the 2 scanners that i have seems to work
i was searching the web the pin outs values of the obd port but doenst find specific info about this one.and the fsm that i downloaded doesnt have info about it.the manual is supossed to work from 96-to 02 but it shows mostly the 02 info.

obd port have metal female pins in
1
10
12
13

the only info i found is that those pins are manufacturer reserved, what?????
and that gmc and some lights trucks use the number 10 pin,so if pin 10 is in use that means is J1850-VPW,but theres no info about the other pins.

im starting to hate my 3rd gen i really do!!!!!

I have no idea, but there shouldn't be anything special you need to pull codes. I have an Actron CP9580 from AutoZone that has worked with every OBD2 vehicle I've owned, to include a '97 and '99 4Runner. Not to ask the obvious, but you have the key on when you're trying to pull the codes right?

I don't believe you can pull the codes that way. It almost sounds like you have a fuse out the powers the OBDII port or some other wiring issue to the port.

This may help:

Glad you got that part figured out. You may a loose/bad wire on a pin or two like Habanero had when hers was not communicating.

Oh, yeah, and gal as in Habanero.

tested today with matco scanner and it linked
no codes beacuse i deleted it before by desconnecting the battery for a few seconds,no mil for now.
im planning to buy a new scanner and i found 2 that seems to be good ones (cheap and with online support)

those are innova 3020 and innova 3030(can be updated by usb)
the 3020 can be purchased at advance auto for $39.99 the 3030 is listed in ebay for about $55
any experiences with innova scanners?

I have a Innova 3100 that was made before they added the update port. It works ok on my 95.5 Tacoma. No input on either model you mention as I've never used 'em.

I have the CEN-TECH® Model/Item 99722 OBDII/EOBD scanner(from Harbor Freight). And it's worked great on every vehicle I've used it on. Which haven't included any Toyotas yet(just a 98 Chevy, a 2000 Mazda, and a 2005 Subaru so far). I should have plugged it into my sister's rental car yesterday when she stopped by, which was a 2012 Toyota Yaris. Maybe I'll do that if I see her again before she's done with it, just to see if it works on it.

Anyway, it should work with any vehicles(Toyota or other) using any of the following OBDII protocols:

SAE J1850 VPW(Variable Pulse Width)
SAE J1850 PWM(Pulse-Width Modulation)
ISO 9141-2
KWP2000
CAN OBDII

Which should cover your 98 4Runner according to this...

SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width) Protocol Pins

J1850 VPW uses pins 2, 4, 5, and 16. Most American cars use J1850 VPW (as well as early Toyotas).

Pin #, Description
2 - Data (on my 96 the wire is White, goes to ECU connector)
4 - Chassis Ground (on my 96 the wire is Brown, check to ground)
5 - Data Ground (on my 96 the wire is White/Black, check to ground)
16 - Power (on my 96 the wire is Violet and is fused, 10 Amp)

ISO 9141-2 Protocol Pins

ISO 9141-2 uses pins 4, 5, 7, 15 and 16. This is the most common type for non-US vehicles, especially Japanese models.

Pin #, Description
4 - Chassis Ground
5 - Data Ground
7 - Data
15 - Data (this pin is optional and may not be present)
16 - Power

can you tell me the obd protocol of your tacoma?
i know that the electricals may be 90% the same as a 4runner but just to make sure the 3030 will work,if your taco obd port uses pins 4,5,7,16 then its iso ,maybe the 15 is there too.
thanks in advance!

Looking at the port as shown in post 4 here:
http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...&Number=388852
and more info: http://www.obdii.com/connector.html

Pins 2, 4, 5, and 16 are the only ones populated on mine. So, J1850 VPW protocol.

My ScanGaugeII connects as VPW mode.

Seems Toyota changed from VPW to ISO protocols in '98 per MudHippy's info in post 14.

O.k., so I wanted to bump this thread to update what I've discovered, so far as which protocols my CEN-TECH® scanner will read. I've now used it successfully on vehicles with all but one of the five OBDII protocols(listed above and again below, except for SAE J1850 PWM, which I haven't confirmed yet).

1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: SAE J1850 VPW
2000 Mazda Protege: ISO 9141-2
2005 Subaru Outback: KWP2000
2012 Toyota Yaris: CAN OBDII

The 2012 Yaris OBDII connector(female) has terminals 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, 13, 14, 16.

I'll update this again if/when I use it on a vehicle with SAE J1850 PWM. I say if, because it's a _ord OBDII protocol. So I hope I never have to go near enough to one to find out...
