I asume it's the size of the rotors and caliper, so the natural question is why can't you put some Tacoma calipers and rotors on, or use the 4cylinder ones? Has anyone done this? and did they notice a loss in breaking power?

Saw this somewhere, but I cannot remember where, I'm thinking maybe it was outdoor wire.

I'll see if I can find it and repost if someone else doen't do it first. I think it had to do with towing safety or some other BS. I'm sure the insurance institue or the marketing guys had the engineers change to 16's though. Toyota hasn't changed much on their own as we all know.

Check Wheelersoffroad.com They sell the 15" rims that are supposed to fit over the 16" rim brake package.

 

The 16" wheel trucks from the factory had the better/bigger rotors and calipers. Get the steel wheels mentioned as they are the easiest way to run a 15" wheel. I wouldn't reduce the braking capacity on my rig with smaller parts but I'm funny that way.

 

Okay, let me set you straight on this, since I've already been through this whole saga.

1) If you are purchasing a 4runner that came with 16 inch wheels, 15 inch rims will NOT fit. The reason they won't fit is due to the larger rotors that were put on 4runners with the 16 inch rims. The calipers are different, but are similarly sized. No amount of backspacing in the world will alow you to get 15's to fit.

2) The rims offered from Wheeler's offroad also will NOT FIT a 4runner that came with 16 inch rims. This is straight from the owner of wheeler's offroad, again, this is due to the 4runners having a larger rotor. This does not apply to Tacomas, with the smaller rotor.

3) Yes, you can switch over the calipers/rotors to run 15 inch rims. However, I priced this out, and it was over 500 dollars for the switch, though I don't remember the exact price.

4) Therefore, any money you might save by buying the more common 15 inch tires would be blown on the parts swap.

Thanks for the info thats what I thought. And I'm not real concerned about running 15in wheels. I just wanted to know if anyone did it and was there a negative effect? I really don't want to make it stop worse just curious if anyone done it and what the outcome was.

I know that some 3rd genners have been able to fit the Tech 1 black wheels from 4wheelparts on there 16" equipped runners. supposedly they fit but really close to the rotors. I may end up doing it sometime.

I have the black Tech1 rockcrawlers from 4wheelparts, 16 inch rims, and 4.25 inch backspacing, if I'm not mistaken. They come very close to the caliper.

I tried a set of 15 inch rims just for fun, with 3.5? backspacing, I think they were american racing rims, and they didn't even come close to fitting over the rotor.
