Why was the 2nd gen I drove so slow!?!?
I have a 00 4Runner v6 and it isn't by any means a beast but when I test drove the 1990 sr5 v6 today it seemed like it was very very slow and that was with no a/c on! It just seemed that in 1st gear it took a very long time to get up to speed(ie, i am not used to cars riding my ass while I am acclerating). Could there be another problem or are they just like that? I can deal with it I was just wondering!

after driving a 00 for a while, the 3.0 will feel like a snail.

well I really liked it except the fact I had to shift the auto manually because the owner says that a speed sensor needs to be replaced in order to be able to shift the trans on its own. it did fine when i bumped it up each gear and down each gear. I just need to know if that is the problem before I trade for it. Thanks for the help everyone!

Let's put it this way... When I would tow my camper with my '90 3.sl0w 5 spd, trucks hauling steel would pass me going uphill while I struggled to maintain 45! How embarassing is that? My '00 has a lot more power.

C'mon, quit complaining. Until you drive a 2.2 liter 4banger pushing 31" tires, you can't complain. I race people and they beat me not knowing that I was racing them... And they're just walking across the intersection!

I guess you're right Kyle. I really do think a big part of the problem is maintenance though. When I bought my runner 2 years ago it had been severely mistreated and abused. It had the original anti-freeze in it (brown by the way). Original plugs and wires - just about everything. I couldn't get it to go over 55mph. I gave her a good home and slowly nursed her back to health and now she looks better and runs better than the day she rolled off the assembly line. A little TLC goes a long way.... God, I am obsessed.

Sure, rub it in!
Actually, mine is fine. It's not particularly fast (it's the slowest vehicle I own if you don't count sailboats.)(Okay, one of the sailboats is faster than the 3.0....) but it does just fine and I enjoy driving it. It pulls hills fine, passes fine, and is certainly more powerful than the 22RE I once had. But if you're used to the 3.4 it will probably seem slow. 5 speed helps...

Ya the nexus of the universe aside the 3.0 can be a capable power plant with lots of love and every available add on. But it just takes time, patience, cash, and an obsessive compulsive need for speed. Once you've had it, it's hard to live without. I loved the lines of the 2nd gen since forever and when things started to fail (as they gradually do) it's the perfect time to make improvements. The trick is not to get impatient. I'm not very good on being patient.

As the self-acknowledged newby to this site, I laughed really hard when I first read "3.slow!" How appropriate! My wife complains when she has to drive my '95 about how slow it is, but I can forgive the lack of acceleration as long as everything else works fine. Don't pull out into fast moving traffic, but if you must just press "ETC" and gun her! I rarely use it, but it's nice to know it's there. Also, I prefer the look of the 2nd gen. Hey, it's a truck not a sports car! My '86 Bronco was a lot quicker, but it spent too much time in the shop, and that's why I've driven a Toyota for 7 years.

My GF complains about the speed (or lack of) because she drives a 6 speed sporty car, but she loves to drive it - she likes being up high, and it's fun to be noticed...

Okay, not to hijack this thread, but I feel the need to be serious for the moment, as I think you'll understand.
Be careful with the speed thing. I came home from work last night in time to watch them peel a car off a telephone pole. The 15 year old girl in the passenger seat died before they could get her into the ambulance. That pole is in my front yard. My girlfriend was home and had to witness that. Bad things do happen. Be careful out there.
