when is the mileage too high for you to buy?

i have been looking around a lot lately trying to find a real nice 3rd gen perferably a 99-02 either an SR5 or limited, but a lot of the vehicles i find for sale seem to have fairly high mileage on them (between 100-150 thousand KM's) which is about 60-100 k miles...

my question is what mileage would you guys consider drawing the line at when considering purchasing a used 3rd gen 3.4L auto 4runner?

and what should i keep an eye out for on these rigs?

thanks

I bought mine at 93,000 miles and it still runs like the day i bought it and it has over 150K miles on it now. Just make sure the proper care was taken to the vehicle and have a mechanic that doesn't work at the dealership to give a once over to look for hidden problems. 3rd Gens are notorious for rear axle seals leaking and that's been the only major problem i've had.

My last yota camry had 120k when I got it, ran fine till I samshed it up and the trans didnt work right.

My T100 has 183k on it, but the previous owner was fanatical about maintinence. It also has a new engien with only 50k.

When I was looking for used yota trucks/runners I would have bought one with 140k so long as it was cared for. A yota will run for dman near forever if someone at least had it maintained a bit.

I wouldn't buy too many american products with 100k all ready on them but with my Toyota (97k on it in late '04) it didnt' bother me one bit.

i bought a 94 p/u in 98 w/88k and it made it to 2005 w/215k w/only a clutch, brakes once and 2 sets of 31" tires before the head gasket went.

the 02 runner had 75k on it and 1.5 years later its at 119k, w/ NO major issues.

as long as good preventive maintenance has been performed all along, id say up to 200k is where you COULD be safe, then its time for some repairs/replacement.

I bought my truck with 150,000 showing.

I am at 201,000 now. I did have some work ddone to it like a new head and gasket type thing but as far as I know it is still the original bottom end.

My 4Runner was purchased with 55K miles, and now has north of 135. There is no sign of it slowing down with proper care.

My FJ40 had an odometer brake at 53K miles, but since it is 35 years old, and does not have a 100K barrel, it could be 153, or even 253. All I know is I trust that original F engine as much as ANY other vehicle on or off the road, hands down.

i have been really looking at this 99' limited with 150,000 km's on it, so that is about 90 k miles, do you guys think it would be worth $14,000 cdn?.. it seemed like a pretty good deal to me but i was afraid of the mileage more than anything but the truck is in amazing looking shape...

glad to hear soooo many of you are having the Yota's way up and over the C-note mark!!!!

I bought mine at 92K miles. I wouldn't hesitate buying a higher mileage vehicle, WITH maintenance records. If the vehicle has been maintained rigorously, I would buy higher.

Really depends on your risk aversion. Other things WILL fail.

thats not a bad deal...even better if it has the rear locker in it. i bought my 98 in '03 with 119km for $23k. now has 165k and of course with proper maintenance mileage isnt an issue. is it a private sale? any maintenance records? those help...have a glance at the engine & tranny dipsticks. might also want to verify if the timing belt has been done. 150K on a 99 is nothing... out here, pre 00 LTD's still go for the high teens to about 20G's...

Irrelevant ? IMO

Too many variables to make up one unique formulation.

My 85 had 175k and was shot so I rebuilt it. My 87 had 275k on it and runs great with some minor maintenance required.

Drive it.
Maintenance history in writing.
First gut response, not emotional reaction.

I wouldn't buy a toyota with more than 700,000 miles on it.

Un-nuh, no way.

Personally, I would not buy any vehicle with more than 50k miles. But that is just me and I do tend to keep my vehicles for a long time.

what you're looking at seems to be relatively low... i didnt want to go above 100k miles but i had 2 other choices, my 68k just being a little higher... i would be aok buying up t0 200k dep on price and what was done to it...

sidenote, do you still refer to the collective amount of distance a vehicle has travelled as "mileage" when you measure in kilometers, or do you have a different term?

yah good point, i never really thought of the calling it "mileage" thing before, but it would sound aweful awkward calling it "kilometerage"
