when did 3rd gen homelink start?
in my ongoing efforts to clean up the 4runner and give her every bell and whistle, i am looking to replace the stock '98 sunvisors with those equipped with the homelink setup on driver's side and a lighted mirror on the passenger's side. my question is, when did they start putting the homelink on the 3rd gens and was it only limited, an option, or what? been looking on ebay but nothing has come up yet.
i bought some visors from a ford explorer with homelink and that stupid voice recorder but broke it trying to install it, clumsy me. and it seems that mounting that style needs to have only a small amount of material between the gizmo box and the face plate because the buttons aren't long enough if you mount it on a plastic panel like i tried, and failed. so, after $40 for the explorer homelink and $40 for a new lower panel, i don't feel like trying anything crazy again, just yet. looking for info on the stock setup to just screw in and wire up.
thanks.

I have an '02 Ltd., what exactly is homelink?
Ahh, I googled and I see it is the garage door opener on the visor. Gotta say I like not having to clip a door opener on my visor.

I use the garage opener thing right in front of the mirror. . . you put your garage opener in it and then you just push up on it to open the garage. It doubles as a sunglass holder. . .

Most of these are made by Gentex or Donnelly. Check serial/model on rear of mirror and google for instructions.
A lot of the newer GM models have the "onstar" feature which isn't any use to us.
I picked up one from ebay from a 2003 Kia Opirus (mirror by Gentex) that has auto dimming and three Homelink buttons for $20.
I seem to remember that someone on the forum decided against retro-fitting a homelink unit into the visor and settling for the roof lining between the sunroof and map lights

UPDATE:
i went to the toyota dealer and talked to my friend that works there. well, he couldn't even find 4runner sun visors with HomeLink on them. he checked several years, none of the pictures had the controls on them, and there was no mention of HomeLink anywhere for 3rd gen 4runners. he found the HomeLink unit for 4th gen 4runners, and the visors with HomeLink in them but for a Sienna; nothing for my baby though. and he said that the price for the Sienna was around $300+!
however, i should have some visors en route from Deathcougar that are from the '02 4runner Limited that he's parting out. i checked his post and noticed them in the pictures dangling from the crumpled roof of the freshly chopped front end. emailed and agreed on a price. i'll see what they are like when they come in, he says they will need to be recovered. but, at least i got them and another project is on the horizon.
i'll post up pics of when i get them, when/if i need them recovered and how much, and of everything installed. i may seek more info from people with an '02 4runner owner's manual on how to program it, but that's a ways a way.
