Wheel spacers...

Wheel spacers...

Im talking about the kind that go between the wheel and the studs to make the tires stick out a bit further. Does anyone have these? Does anyone know if there is a down side to them or if my tires would rub more if they stuck out another 1/4 inch?

*Spacers are made in various quality grades. Some spacers may not be able to withstand the forces generated by aggressive or competitive vehicle use.
*Spacers that use a generic or slotted pattern (for use on a variety of hub patterns) may make proper location of the assembly very difficult.
*Spacers may necessitate longer lug bolts.
I would like to add a couple things:

*Changes the wheels center of gravity. This causes wandering during braking, and while on the freeway.
*Adds rotational mass, slowing you down a bit.

So generally they aren't the best idea. I'd just like for my stance to be a little wider.

Yeah, I would like to get a wider look for my rig. But it sounds like they're not made for people who are gonna be hitting rocks or jumps and poppin some wheelies...hmm...that sucks.

I may just need to get some wider tires...

Are there any wheel spacers made that are SAFE to use? How much would those be and where?

Hmm...I don't know what else to do. I love the look of a wider stance...

You guys could just get different wheels with more of an offset. (I may have that backwards).

The black steel 16's that I want have an increased offset of .75" over stock. That will cause them to stick out more.

Yea that's what I was thinking. Instead of say for example a 16x7 wheel, go for a 16x8. That'll give you the look you want. But also depending on your setup, you may rub with that extra inch. but I doubt with that lift you will bogger.

Actually, Discount can get me 16x7 black steelie's with 4.75" backspacing. That would be .75" farther out than stock.

So, you dont always have to get an 8" wheel. But I know what you mean - that would work too.

New wheels are not an option. I like the stock wheels and I also cant afford new ones.

I have the 1/4" ones on my rig, and had them on my 96, never had a problem. But they dont make a noticable difference in width.

Adam -

Do they make any wider ones? The whole point of going with wheel spacers is to make them look wider, but you said they don't seem to be any wider. Have you noticed any abnormal wear/tear on anything after installing them?

The 1/4" wheel spacers make no noticeable difference, and are transparent as far as driveability and wear and tear. This is as wide as you can go without getting longer wheel studs, or using special adapters like the allpro ones.


The bigger ones from allpro would add something like 3" of width, so yes those would be noticeable

That just kinda scares me though, sounds like that might cause a lot of problems.

Wouldn't those spacers from allpro put more strain on the front wheel bearings?I mean if your pushing your wheels farther from the hubs does that create more leverage on the bearings causing them to wear out faster?I'm not sure but I thought I heard that somewhere.

Theoretically yes, but in real world use I have never heard of anyone having problems. Ive heard from people who used them in street track racing, and hardcore rock crawling and never once has anyone had a problem.

Like Adam said it probably would put more stress on your hub assembly but its not any different than going with a wheel that has more than a factory offset.

New wheels with "more" offset will bring the tire "into" the wheelwell more. Wheels with "less" will make them stick out further. also, if your were to get new wheels with less offset, the moment arm stays the same as the stock rims (the distance the force from the wheel is being applied on the hub) whereas if you were to add a spacer, the moment arm would get longer which would increase the stress. So long story short, spacers cause more stress on the hub, wheels with less offset don't.
