What about the injectors? If they are worn/dirty and stick they may leak extra gas into the cylinders when the engine is off. After the few revs it burns off. Just a thought, Mine does the shake thing after driving pretty hard (5k rpms). I think the head gasket may be an issue also.

i had an 88 celica that did the same exact thing the same sound and the same problem warming...mine would cut of for a little while till it warmed up..and it would sputter around 45.

when i got that fixed the problem was a cracked head and one of the spark plugs was not firing and gave me a dead cylinder.

hope this helps it cost me about 500 to get it fixed and it happened about 5 months after i bought the car used.

I saw the "t" after the "3l" so I thought that might of meant turbo. A lot of times (unless I'm totally missing something) car manufactures put a "t" next the engine's displacement if the car has a turbo. (ie, VW 1.8T, Audi 2.7T) That's the part I was wondering about. Not the 3l. I know what that means.

Anyhow, I hope the dealership can figure out what your problem is. It's no fun having the 4Runner out of service.

Well, have fun all.

While they fix the headgasket they'll also tell you to replace the timing belt (if you haven't done it yet). You should do it because then you'll only have to pay for the part and not the labor, or at least not much labor since it's already apart. You might also want to think about replacing the water pump and power steering pump too. These are known for going out, but if you don't have the money then it's not really that necessary. Both of mine are original and I've got 170k miles, although my PS leaks a little.

Maybe you should look at an independant shop do the HG, probably a little cheaper.
