Under the 15,000 mile service for 4Runner's....

What's "retorque the propeller nut bolt" and "lubricate the propeller shaft?"

Is that a crucial maintenance item?

Under what "job" on the invoice would that be listed?

I hate these dealers. I went to one @14,000 miles after a long trip saying I wanted the 15,000 mile service.. I must have asked *10* times for it, before and after it was done...

They said "yah yah it was done"..

So a month later I get a reminder notice that I should be due for my 15,000 service! WTF.

So I did that.. the invoice only listed a few things....
1) transmission service
-they changed the auto tran fluid (seems early to me? )
-I'm hoping the changed the diff fluid??
-I'm hoping the lubricated something

2)throttle body clean & air filter
-this wasn't even in the manual... was it needed?

And I don't see "propeller" or "torque" or anything like that anywhere... is that part of the above or should it be listed separately?

Man..I can't stand service garages that don't even know their own auto...

 

I think the propeller shaft is just a drive shaft, using another term So the "propeller nut" isn't a specific kind of nut, just a nut on the propeller shaft Heck, I don't really know, why did I even answer???

 

Propeller shaft = drive shaft.

There is a four bolt flange at each end of the front and rear drive shafts on 4 wheel drive trucks. Torque is 54 ft. lbs. Since these are the only bolts on the drive shaft, I assume these are the bolts in question. I have not retorqued mine. I am about to do a 30,000 mile service and will look in to it then. I took a quick look and it appeared that getting a wrench on the bolts might be difficult. I may be wrong. Look in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide that came with the truck. It appears that the bolts are to be retorqued every 15,000 miles on 4 wheel drive trucks.

I lube my drive shaft universal joints and sliders at every oil change. That's three times a year. It's amusing that the Scheduled Maintenance guide says to lube them daily when off road. Wonder how many do that?

 

So, are the drive shaft universal joints and sliders the propeller shaft lube points? I'm totally new to doing this sort of service and I want to be sure I don't miss something. Thanks.

 

Yes. The zerks along the driveshaft are what they mean.
