What goes in that compartment?

I wanted to know what people keep in the utility compartment in the back of the 3rd generation 4Runners. It seems that there would be some sort of road-side emergency kit that Toyota would offer or something. If they do have one I would love to know why they don't come standard with the truck.

hey...good question. I think that the factory CD changer might go there. I just keep a small set of jumper cables and stuff in mine

I think Toyota sells some kind of a storage box to fit there, but I've never seen one.

I would think that if you put an amp in there it would get too hot being closed up like that. A good idea would probably be to tap into the rear AC outlet and mount a fan to blow across the amp(s) to keep it cool.

I am sure there is some sort of utility box or something, I just don't know what it looks like and how much it would cost. Maybe I will stop into the dealer to see what they have to say. The fact that there are two adjustable straps in there definitely tells me that something probably fits nicely in that box.

I think it's mentioned in the owner's manual.

Yeah I did just seem something about that, but have not seen a picture or anything to get an idea of what the heck it's all about.

I use the space for my sub-woof box. Q-Logic makes it so it fits right into the space. It's made just for 3rd gen Runners.

I put my changer back there, but there is also room for random tools and a power inverter that I wouldn't mind hardwiring from the dc plug right there, I just havn't gotten around to it yet.

i dont really like cd changers. you have to stop, get out to change cd's. they are kind of nice though if you only listen to a few cd's, but i have about 150 that i change pretty frequently... so not really right for me... if i did install one (in a 4runner) id put it up front somewhere as opposed to way in the back.

great place for a sub too, if you have one small enough to fit there. is there one on each side?? would be awesome to hook up a sub in each.

I think in Japan they have emergency kits that go in that compartment from the factory.

I'm geeky enough to have read my manual when I got my rig a few weeks ago. There is supposedly an optional roadside kit that fits there. I keep a few clean cotton cloths, jumper cables, deckplate cover, and my hitch in there. That pretty much eats it all up.
