what gears to get??
i have a 94 22re auto... i have 33 in tires, with like 5-6" of lift total.... what should i re gear to? 4.88's? and who sells the gears for cheap and what brand etc... sorry i dont know much about this yet... thanks - steve

I got a couple of questions for you:
1. 5-6 total inch of lift? with only 33's? seems a little much, got a pic of your truck?
2. do you plan on going with bigger tires in future?
If not, than i could THINK 4.56 would be fine, but i'm not quite sure. as what "brand" i do not know, sorry.

4.88s are the proper gear ratio for 33" tires, but if you ever decide to go to a 35" tire, you will regret not going with 5.29s. consider a locker will you have the third member out to change the gears. as for brand, i'd look at US gear or precision gear.

try west coast differentials. alot of my friends had good things to say with them. and then there is all pro offroad. avoid randy's ring & pinion, my friends had alot of problems getting gears from them. as for brands, i'm not sure. you only need the 4cyl gears but if you can afford some, you can upgrade to a v6 diff housing with v6 gears. they are stronger.

If it is a runner, get 5.29's
I suppose that is the same answer if it were a truck since it is an auto.
I run 33's with 5.29's behind a V-6 and auto. It is great.
I would also recomend getting larger tires or less lift. You should be able to fit 35's with at much height.

i was thinking about going with 35's cause im pretty sure i can clear them... put them wouldnt it be even slower? i actually dont have tooo much trouble getting up to speeed.... but then again my speedo is off so it only seems like im going faster..... so i take it either way with 33's or 35's, 5.29 is the right gear to get correct?

got a new question for you guys... i called west coast differentials and they said the rear gear set was 140$ or so, front was like 106$, and each installation kit was around 100$ or so..... what is the front for? i thought i just needed to change the rear gears in the differential? im still learning so if u guys could explain that would be great.... also should i buy the install kit/kits if i plan on having a shop do it for me. - steve

The gears that you are changing are in the differential (on the axle). You have to change both the front and the back so that they both rotate at the same speed. This is why it cost so much. Also, that seems like a very good price for everything.

5.29 is right for your auto transmision.
Make sure you take it to a place that knows how to regear.

wow is it really that cheap to regear???
i was under the impression it was a $1000+ job. I'm in the exact same situation: 94 4runner v6 3.0 Auto, 6-7" of lift, 33''s for a year or so, then up to 35''s. So go with the 5.29's right?
