What to do... what to do...
Ok, I've utterly confused myself. I want a rig that I can offroad with alot but still feel confortable driving daily to school, work, dates, etc. (cant have the chicks feeling uncomfortable). Please vote on whether I should:
A) Keep my 2000 4Runner Limited EVEN though its 2WD and trail-ride (get towed by 4x4s) with it until it's value is less than a Rav4. Included would be installing SAWs and Downey Coils & keeping my Borla exhaust.
B) Sell my 2000 4Runner Limited ($18k?) and search the internet for an amazing deal on a 00-02 Sport Edition 4X4 with grey leather interior (may take 2 years to find). Then install SAWs and Downey Rear Coils & transfer my current Borla exhaust. Chances of this one happening are slim to none. I dont think Ill find a 00-02 Sport w/everything I want for around $18K.
C) Sell my 2000 4Runner Limited ($18k?) and buy a 96-99 4Runner 4X4 with Red Exterior, Grey leather interior, hopefully a locker and manual transmission. Then, install SAWs & Downey Rear Coils & transfer my current Borla exhaust & spend excess cash on locker(s) & TJM.
D) Sell my 2000 4Runner Limited ($18k?) and buy a 94-95 4Runner 4X4 with Red Exterior, Grey Leather interior, Manual transmission & hella miles. Then, spend the $10-15k excess cash on a SAS, bigger engine switch, locker(s), and TJM.
Im confused, so help me out. ANY input is greatly appreciated.

Hate to put a damper on your wish list. But gray leather is an aftermarket or dealer installed option only on 3rd gens. Leather came in Oak only from the motherland. Toyota wised up on the 4th gens.

I think I'd rule out OPTION D simply because you're downgrading from a third generation to a second generation when third generations are much better than second generations overall.

What about option
E) Sell 2000 4Runner Limited ($18k?) and buy a 3rd gen 4Runner 4X4 with ??? Exterior and trd e-locker.... look on ebay and buy the gray leather seats for $350 or whatever they go for (my dad got some for his tundra and they look factory, feel great, and havent gotten worn at all) Then, install SAWs & Downey Rear Coils & transfer my current Borla exhaust & buy tjm/arb and some sliders when a group buy comes around...

I only speak from experience.................
So if you have something good to contribute, then let me move out your way and convince the man to get a 2ND GENERATION rather than a 3RD GENERATION.

I believe PoBoy got a new engine. And his truck is pretty darn sweet. But if you are going to get a 00-02, There is a red limited in aville (NC) with a locker. I forgot what they are asking, i'll run by tonight and see. I believe its in the teens, its at the same place I got mine from. Its in mint condition (all of their cars are). I'll post the price, and let me know if you are interested. You could come up and see it if you'd like. Your welcome to stay here, we always have atleast two extra beds for felow NC4Rocians!

ProLax, let me know exactly what your willing to pay and I think we can get you one hell of a deal. I got a friend that is a dealer and he can get you an amazing deal on a 3rd en if your price range is in the teens like that. He could never help me out b/c I always needed to stay under 10 which is one hell of a job to do on 3rd gens. If not, and your willing to drive, look in Virgina for a truck, you know I have had alot of luck looking up there.
You know that 96 w/ the 5spd and E-locker I got my dibs on, you can't beat the price either, but it does help he's from Yotatech. But it seems as though VA has the best deals. But let me know if you want to try the auto auction w/ my dealer friend.
It seems as though everyone here from NC is willing to do all we can to help you out, seeing how most of us will be making trips together, we need to make sure we're all well equiped.

The only logical choice IMHO is C...get an older 3rd gen 4 wheel drive that you can afford. I'd rather drive a 2wd 3rd gen than a 2nd gen UNLESS you are only about off road. They are almost annoying to drive daily (I did it) just because of the severe lack of power. Engine transplants are costly and very time consuming even if you do it yourself....points to remember. I think your well on the right track looking for a '96 w/all those options. Pfaxe is right though, no grey leather offered from toyota and the eBay kit is an option though its been mentioned lately here that the quality is less than par. I'll be going through Katzkin.com for my kit, looks better and comes with a 3 year warranty.
Good luck on whatever you try!

I vote D
Partially cuz I want those SAWs Dave has 4 sale and if you go with option D I can buy em
The other, and main reason, is I'm a HUGE fan of the SAS, wish I could afford to do it to my 96. Maybe next year.
Other than that C looks good, real good actually.

You guys are awesome.
Turbo: Id love to get more information on the 4Runner up there. Especially with a locker already, that would be great.
Stump: Sounds like a great opportunity. Ill hit you up on IM next time I see you.
I might have found a good 4Runner to buy here in Charlotte, but its nowhere near final. Still gotta sell my own and haggle the guys price down a bit.

Pro,
Went by the dealership and I guess someone just scooped it up... It had been there for atleast a month. :pat: I'll keep my eyes open though, and I'll tell them to keep their eyes open too. They are constantly going to auctions.

id like to see your 3rd gen make it down this trail
BTW - im not saying he should buy a 2nd gen and do all that, he clearly stated he wants a road friendly car. im just defending my stance that for HEAVY duty offroading a 1st/2nd gen is better. you just gotta decide what you really want
