What to do if you hydro lock?

When I was 4Wheeling a few weekends ago up by Animas Forks, I saw a guy in a rented Jeep Wrangler floor it through a stream and kill his engine.
Smoke started billowing out (steam?) and he was dead in the water.

What can you do to get going again if this happens?

Toyota: pull the plugs, start the engine a few times, dry off the plugs, reinsert plugs, drain any water in the airbox, good to go.

jeep- call for a tow

You can do MAJOR engine damage... water does not compress so when it gets sucked into your engine it can and will break or bend valves, and you figure its a lot cooler than the inside of your engine so you take the chance of cracking something anyway! Ive got my distributer wet and had to dry out the plug wires and cap but I really dont think if you suck water into the intake to the point that the engine locks its going to be a quick fix... a friend in an Explorer installed an open K&N and bashed through a deep stream and locked his engine up, it was trashed... $5,000 F-up... I crawl through water with my rig, no need to floor it anyway! just my .02...........

Start weeping and pass around the hat to begin the colletion of money you're going to need for a new engine.

Connecting rods bend, and/or blow a head gasket. Depending on how severe, its driveable for quite some time after you do the stuff sdastg1 said.

Pull motor, replace bent parts, send off the head to be reworked, reassemble it all and then sell it to your little brother, who will drive it for another 100K miles.

The intake on the jeep sits really low and sucks in water really easily. That happened to my brother but he used the pull the plugs and crank it method and it worked for him.

Here are pics of me hydrolocking my sportbike this past weekend

Same procedure, pull the plugs, dry them off, start it up, and reinsert. good to go!

My co-worker has a Jeep Wrangler and he was out camping with the top off. Rainstorm came through and soaked the Jeep interior. He bailed it out, it still ran but the check engine light came on. Turns out the rain fried the computer. Big problem is Chrysler doesn't stock the computer for his 10 year old Jeep. He's been searching eBay and other forums but he might be hosed.
