What damage have you sustained offroading?

Well, I've been considering picking up a spare CV, just in case I ever had one blow out on the trail. I'm curious what you guys may have broken while offroading. The worst I've run into is a bunch of pinstriping, and a dent in the rear fender.

Ummmm, let's see. Damaged body parts: drivers door (top right corner), Drivers side fender (the tree and it didn't get along), passenger side fender (same as above), passenger side extended cab right below the window (slid off a root into a tree), both bedsides and tail gate (damn trees) Oh, by the way the tail gate was down when my dad desided to back into a tree with it. The only mechanical problem was that I broke my altinator bolt that holds it into the bracket.

I had a twig puncture the sidewall of my Goodyear GSA's on my old Tacoma. Those tires suck.

From one trip.....

Body damage- passenger tail light assembly smashed and about one inch of body damage in every direction around the light.

Mechanical- severed bump stop, ripped off differential breather, and, it's up to speculation, but my recent ring gear failure could be because of that too, but I think it was going before I took it offroading.

Since I don't do "offroading" I haven't damaged anything but a few tires, and my wallet. After spending time exploring the backcounrty I started spending $$, now I can't stop. I think it money well spent. Alot depends on your level of 4Xing, but IMO carrying CV and U-joints are a good idea, but a good tire repair set-up (compressor, Safety Seal, tube, tire tools, etc) is more useful.

Blue does not break!

All ive damaged was a tow strap from trying to get a two wheel drive ranger back up off of a horse trail. These guys were doing a night run in a frikkin 2wd truck. I was out on the town cruising and my buddy got the call that retards were offroading on a damn horse trail. They got stuck on a major down grade and chickened out as would I if I were in that lil ˟˟˟˟˟ truck. They were so far down this hill that we had to double up tow straps and I guess mine was the weakest link. SNAP! I was pissed and telling the dipwads to cough up some cash for a new strap. Go figure none of em had money. I will never go tow someone I dont know out. Let em walk!

Wow, I thought I had it fairly bad...

Rear Bumper (still not replaced to date...there just is none!)
There are a few nice dents on the rear passanger side
Blown radiator
Paint Scratches (inevitable!)

thats about it!

What about downtown offroading? I forgot about denting my rear bumper back in the days of FITTING into the covered parking garage at the Medical Center I work at. I was backing into my spot and forgot about that damn concrete pole that blocks rigs from backing into the wall. I was pissed that was my first and last actual damage to my 4Runner. But thank god I cant even fit into the covered parking garage now even though I constanlt worry I will try and tear my roof lights off.

One time I jumped a curb in my Exploder, bottomed out, and blew both my fog lights. Curb jumping is no sweat in the 4Runner though.

I want to tell you guys about a Jeeper I saw. I was taking my buddy home from the bar and he told me to stop quick. He saw this Jeep Cherokee lifted with ARB toys and then some. It looked sweet as hell until my buddy pointed out "look under neith" I looked and even as drunk as I was I still saw the problem. This guys transfer case EXPLODED! I had never saw a transfer case do that. The houseing was shattered but the rest of the rig made up for it. I hate wranglers but Cherokees are sweet. Prolly cuz im an suv guy.

Having a spare CV would be nice...but is that really a repair you want to do on the trail? If the CV goes, you can continue on with rear-wheel drive. If the terrain doesn't get any better than where the CV broke...you're probably best off just turning around there.

Now if you're out in the middle of no-where on a long trip, that's a different story. Spare parts are a must!!

Just my 2-cents.

Jim,

The problem is with the 3rd gen 4runners is ADD (automatic disconnecting differential)- with a busted CV, we can't unlock the front hubs and just continue in 2WD. The CV's are always turning even in 2WD, at least thats the way I understand it. Also why ORS charges 1100 bucks for the manual hub swap......
