what can i do?

I am tempted to drive my 90 4runner to colorado. it only has 130k on it, and i know its a toyota, but somewhere back in my mind, i think to myself, 'thats 2500 miles man, this truck just cant do it'. again, its a toyota, and it runs great, its never run to great on the highway, but then again i have never been in another 4runner on the hw...my question is this: is there anything i can do, to make sure my truck is up to par,ie, check ups and tune ups, so i know, there is nothing that will go wrong and my truck will run great all they way there and all they way back. thank you very very much...more responses the better, even if they say the same thing..i need input, thanks in advance!!!!-Kyle

Change all the fluids, change spark plugs/wires, make sure all belts, hoses, and filters are in good condition. Then have a trusted mechanic give it a good tune up/check over.

Only 130K on a 90.

Just get a good tune up, and replace all the fluids.

Wow 130K on a 90.
My 88 is double that and some change.

Man your kidding right.. 130K is nothing. Unless your truck has been nothing but used and abused you shouldn't have any problems. I just drove 1500 miles and all I did was change my oil before I left. Then again I am maintenance freak on mine too. I would say you'll be alright. To prepare do what the others have said and if you have any small things "you've been meaning to fix" but haven't had time fix em.. Small things become big things most of the time if left alone. Have a good trip

1989 4runner here, 167k miles. I've driven from Denver to Indianapolis (spend xmas with the family) for the past 5 years, 2200 miles round trip. I've had zero problems *knock on wood*. For the first few years, I always took it in and had the engine looked over. This last trip, I didnt' even take it in, I just got in and drove

when I drove out to denver for the first time back in '93, my '84 Bronco2 died in Salina kansas I was stranded in Salina for 4 days until the mechanics could get the necessary parts to rebuild my transmission. My toyota has never left me stranded anywhere (knock on wood again).

Ditto, ditto, ditto. Some good advice here. Do the plugs, wires and distributor cap yourself, you'll save some money. Change your oil, engine belts AND your radiator hoses. If youre still concerned.... have it checked over by a mech. Personally, I would not be concerned. My wife's old 88 Camry wagon has 172k on it, the guy who bought it from us runs back and forth to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota w/ it. (cancer pt.) He leaves his 98 Dodge Ram P.U. @ home and takes the good car!

so it looks as though the final consensus is to change all the fluids and plugs, wires and such. one question. i have had a leaky oil pan gasket for a while now...its gonna cost big time money to fix that puppy. am i ok with not changing that, hasnt hurt me yet..just keep an eye on the oil level? and thanks all of you for the responses! i appreciate it very much.- Kyle

And yea, btw...me and my dad have put all the 110k on it...we bought it with 18k on it and put the rest 110k on it. those 18 were put on by ppl in colorado taking ppl up and down the mountain in the winter time..i dont know how the truck was treated during this time but i know from 18k on, it was treated very well. buh bye.

Question: Can you get to all of the bolts holding the oil pan on? (I'm asking, never worked on a 90). If so, just replace it yourself and save a bunch of $$.

Anyway if the leak isn't bad then don't worry about it, just check the level occasionally or when you stop for gas, etc.

Otherwise the mileage won't be an issue... Have a fun trip!

well you can do that on domestics and probably some imports but a mechanic friend said he would have to take out the front differential just to change it. and that would be like 400..i havent yet searched to see if its true but i doubt he would be lying to me..but good idea..is this true everybody?
