what do i need to regear the rear thats different. can i get a 2nd gen v6 3rd and just use that?

Are you wanting to know what kind of 3rd member you have? Gear ratio?

will and 8in from any year 3rd member work so i can just regear that.

 

i know i have 4.10s but i need 5.29s for the 35s

 

If its a 8diff they are all interchangable as far as I know on the solid axle.. the IFS you may have to do a little research on.. Im pretty sure your front diff is going to be different from the back one

I ended up buying mine off craigslist with gears and ARBs already installed.

 

ya i have been looking on cl for a v6 3rd. to avoid any complications of the 4cyl diff.....

i guessing i have the 4cly 3rd but idk. anyone have any ideas were i can find a cheap empty 3rd, or what i will need to re gear my 3rd?

Um...they mean literally replacing the 4 cylinder third member with the v6 third...housing is identical on 4 cylinder and v6 models.

 

that would make sense. buy they did say "the difference
between a v6 and 4cyl diff is the bearing size" so i figured i could just get v6 bearings.

so i am extremely confused.

does anyone know what 3rd member i have from the pics?^^^

"Toyota 8" 3rd member housings. All the housings are interchaneable in that the mounting studs and axle splines are identical. The 4 cyl differential internals are different than the V6 and High Pinion, so that lockers and limited slips are different. The 4 cyl ring and pinion gears are somewhat smaller overall than the V6 parts, i.e. the ring gear is thinner and the pinion gear and bearing are less substantial. The 4- and 6-cyl housings can be distinguised by the number and style of reinforcing ribs present."

theres also a chart on here for when you buy new/used ones you can tell that they really are..

An all your IFS diffs are the same up to the mid 90s... the differece on whats in side is somewhat a preference thing, your generally gonna get 4.10s 2pinion, 4.88s 2 pinion or 5.29 2 pinion.. If it has 3 fins its a 2 pinion, if it has 4 fins its a 4 pinion, Or this is what I learned when I was lookin for some. Never say any 4 pinion though...
I dont think that a v6 is going to tear up a 4cly diff, people have still got decent hp out of the 4cly. My 5.29s tore my already wore out tranny up however.. Just make sure that you have the same gear ratio up front and in the back... Do some counting before you put them in.
Or you can find a shop that will set your gears and you can buy gears offline or what ever. But you might as well through in lockers with them too... which again you got personal choice on whats the best... Do your research and figure out whats best for what your gonna do..

If you decide to change diffs or re gear yours Id recommend doing a little research on the tearing down and rebuilding the front end. Since you have to full the axles to get the diff out.. It can take some time.

so i guess there all v6s im surprised no one knows. does anyones 3.4 look like mine?

 

You have a v6 third, trust me...I had a 97 2.7 runner.... After 95 4cylinder diffs didn't come in any application, all are v6.

 

thank you crolisson, i belive you are correct.

i picked up a v6 3rd member on cl from a 3rd gen (ran out of oil and burned up) looks exactly the same as mine.. going to put ring/pinion and bearing kit Detroit locker in that and just swap them.

 

Good choice on lockers, I'm still running my old v6 third out of my 4runner in the front of my taco
