As the title states, today was my first off road adventure. My 4runner is bone stock with the exception of a satoshi grill and the removal of the running boards.

This thing trucks! Good god, I was amazed at the crap I could do. I wish I could show you pictures, but I didn't have a camera.

I had one little snag up however, and got caught in some SOFT mud. Took me about 10 minutes of rocking the thing back/foward and spinning the tires (made like 1.5' ruts ) but I got out. It was exhilarating but scary.

As I was back on the main roads driving home, car caked in mud, i hear a fwump.. fwump... and lo and behold I have a flat tire. I pull over, jack up the car and try to put my spare on. I need about 1/4" more height, so I give the jack another turn and the damn thing breaks. the brake disc slams into the concrete and I'm thinking, "Oh you have to be $^&*$&* kidding me." My stepdad came by and helped me jack the thing up with his jack and we eventually got the spare on.

Now the tires I had on there had a decent amount of tread left on them, but they're nowhere near new. I'm thinking about getting some 265/75/r16 Nitto Terra Grapplers, as they seem to be what I'd need. I drive 85% street 15% ice/snow/offroad. This is my DD.

I can get them from discount tire for $128 a pop and $655 for 5 out the door. I don't have a local dealer that I can get them from, so that looks to be my only option for those. If I go that route should I get the replacement thing that warranties the tires ($19 a pop and $95 total)?

Are there any other tires that you'd suggest that I would be more able to find locally and that would give me comparable results for what I'm looking for?

I've got over three years and 30k miles on my TGs and I won't hesitate to buy another set when these wear out and are a nice alternative to the BFGs and cheaper too.

 

id be more concerned with getting you a new jack, lol. and TGs... those are the nitto terra grapplers, arent they?

If you are asking if you should buy the certs from discount tire. I would say yes!!! I have had a total of 6 tires replaced (on 3 different cars) and all of them were covered under the certs. Even stuff that was my fault like driving on a low tire causing a heat ring.

 

is your truck 4wd cxrazy? and sorry to hear about your bad luck with the tires. i am also thinking about getting the same size tires and brand when i have to get new ones.

 

i really like the cooper st tires they r agressive and get a lot of miles out of them.the st not the stt.and they do awesome off road.

 

that sucks about the tires, but sounds like you had a riot. Reminds me of the first time I went wheelin...then i got the bug! 4runners are impressive stock I'll agree.

I have a stock jack if you're interested, don't know how much shipping is...i have no use for it anymore---it doesn't reach

you see terra grapplers on lots of show trucks....that should tell you something about their performance off road..

I would look at BFG all terrains or mud terrains..great all around tires

those tires will take you anywhere...

 

You need to invest in a Hilift or other farm style jack. Since I so seldom use my jack I got mine from Harbor Freight on sale for $30. You can also carry a couple pieces of plywood to put under the jack to give you extra lift. If you can get a stock one cheap thats good but the Hilift will do more than just lift the truck so I'd think about one of those.

Anyways, you should absolutely get the warranty on the tires. Also, double-check with these guys to make sure a 265/75 will fit under the truck.

 

i pretty much do the exact same kind of driving you do. BFG all terrains are the perfect tire in my opinon. they do extremely well in the ice/snow and are exceptionally well offroad.

 

i wish i would have went mud terrains over all terrains

Local tire place quoted me @ $850 installed and with a warranty on all 4 tires so if one wears down/blowsout within 3 years I'll get a replacement for free.

Should I get the 265/70/r16's like the stock or the 265/75/r16's for a bit bigger tire? Would there be much power loss (don't think so) or MPG loss (again I don't think so but its better to ask)?
