Weird Shifting on 4th Generation

I put the Borla dual exhaust on over the weekend. I then pulled the battery cables to reset the engine control computer(s). My thinking was it will breathe better, so I will let it relearn its settings.

All was well until I got on the freeway, about 30 miles since disconnecting the battery, and mashed the pedal, it shifted down to third normally. But after coming up to speed it would not shift out of third, I moved the lever down to third then fourth then fifth, but it stayed in third. If I let of the gas the RPMs would drop to 1500 or so, but as soon as the gas was applied back to 4,000 RPM. I took the first exit and put it in park. Still would not shift out of third. I stopped and turned off the motor and restarted and it now shifts out of third, and all seems normal.

Any thoughts?

My thought is it is a complicated computer and if it fixed itself then good don't worry about it.

Just like what Edge said, good thing the computer fixed itself

If it happens again, just drop it by the stealer and have them take a quick look to see if it might be something trivial. I seriously doubt that it's the Borla that's causing this issue for ya anyway. Also could be that the cpu is still learning your driving style so it's still adjusting as well.

I third that notion....What Good Times said, my vehicle ran rough the first 500 miles. It has since adjusted GOOD.

Never had it stick in a gear though, just erratic idle and tranny searching. Since you can buy this set-up through Toyota, take it by the dealer and have them look at it, they might not realize you had installed it. If everything is fine, then you get a warranty invoice and away you go, carefree in knowing the Toyota shop gave it their blessing and if something develops later, doubtful, at least it is on record.

Thanks all.

At this point I think I will wait and see if it happens again. It was fine on my 35 mile commute today. If it does happen again, I will let you know.

Hey Edge,

I won't say for sure that they do not rub. I really don't think there will be an issue. But I have not had them off road yet. I think they will be close though. If they do rub it will be the inboard side of the front mud flap. I will post if they do rub.

My concern was with the spare tire, 270/65, rubbing the panhard bar, which it does not. Then with the crossover of the dual exhaust on the spare, which it does not touch. But I am getting a heat shield for that part of the exhaust, just to be safe.

I really am pleased so far...

Now there is a concern I never thought of...

Big Stew: Where did you find your heat shield? Is it something being installed by a local shop like Meineke?

No rubbing on full turn left/right?

Add a K&N or aFe re-usable filter to your Borla set-up. It is good for another 5hp and instant response.

The heat shield came from Summit Racing, it is a Thermo-Tec, part number 11600, http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/11600/11600.html I Just got it today, foil like face and a fabric like back with 3 hose clamps. Looks like it will be just right.

I do not have rubbing in a full left or right. It is close but it is at the center of the tire, so up and down movement will only make it increase. But not any off-road...yet...
